A wireless router is a wireless device that connects one computer or a whole network to another computer or network. They are present in homes and offices. A wireless router powers a wireless network which is responsible for sending information from one computer to another.
The router configuration manual has to be consulted before configuring. The manual is helpful for understanding the router features and steps for configuring it. If the manual is not along with router, then it can be downloaded it from vendor website.
A wireless router works in a similar manner as a wireless mobile phone. The router helps to share a single Internet connection between two or more computers which can be on the same floor or even on different floors.
Wireless router is connected to a broadband cable or a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Internet connection and makes use of radio frequency wireless waves in place of telephone cables to broadcasting and collecting wireless signals. A wireless network functions as a two-way radio communication system. There are 13 wireless channels (1-13) supported. All devices in the wireless network must use the same channel in order to function correctly.
It allows data to communicate from one place to another. The information from the computer system is converted into a wireless radio signal before its communication. The wireless router interprets the radio signal after collecting it and subsequently transmits the data to the Internet through a wired connection. It uses a similar method wherein radio and television programs are aired. It can also accept data from the web, transform it into a radio signal and then send it to a computer.
Changing the IP address
The IP address is a logical address assigned to the network card in order to establish communication over the network and also to identify the computer over it. Most of the routers have built-in DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server which will automatically assign an IP address to the computers in the wireless network. Follow the steps below to learn how to change your IP address.
For changing the IP address in Windows XP used mostly around the world, here are the steps;
- Press Start from the desktop,
- Open Control Panel,
- Click ‘Network Connections’ and go to Local Area Connection
- Press the option of ‘Properties’ and then press ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’.
It has to be kept in mind that different ISP’s have different procedures related to IP address changes and if an IP change is requested once and it was approved, then it is possible that it might not be approved so easily the next time.
