Internet has over Half a Billion Websites

Internet has become a great source of knowledge, fun and entertainment in recent few decades. The growing popularity of Internet has no doubt its share in increasing number of websites. The number of websites is growing day in and day out at a quick pace. According to Netcraft, there are over 504 million active hostnames, i.e. active and inactive websites, on Internet at the moment.

The Internet has seen a growth of about 3.8% or 18 million hostnames over the month of September. The current standing of hostnames is measured to be 504.082.040 websites, reported Netcraft. In the race of web servers, Apache still leads with over 326 million hostnames under its belt followed by Microsoft and nginx respectively. Google holds the fourth spot in web server’s race. According to Netcraft, Apache gained over 10 million new hostnames, but also lost 86,000 active websites. This contributes to loss in market share of 1.09% in total compared to other web servers gaining new hostnames.

Apache at this time considered a home of about 99.9 million active websites on Internet.

Reports suggest that Microsoft is currently the home for more than 21.1 million websites and gained almost 600,000 new websites last month. As of October, a slight decline has been noticed in the Apache and Microsoft camp over the last month, i.e. compared to last month’s 68.88% share of Apache, it stands at 65.28%, while Microsoft currently has 15.20% of share compared to last month’s 15.38%.

Both nginx and Google see a rising market share for the month of October over last month. nginx added over 1.6 million active websites to bring its total to 19.1 million, while Google gained 138.8 million websites with an increase of 0.04% over the last month. Google is currently at fourth place with a total of 153.9 million active sites.
