Samsung to introduce Smartphones with Flexible Screens

Samsung is not a new name in electronics industry. Samsung has been in the market for many years offering some remarkable products. Samsung in recent few years emerged as a significant figure in smartphone and tablet market. Samsung recently announced that the company is preparing to release mobiles phones, which boast off flexible displays early next year. The same technology will be incorporated in smartphones and tablets soon thereafter.

Flexible OLED Panel

IDG in its report quoted Samsung that the company is hoping to continue the success trend of its Galaxy S II, a smartphone launched five months ago and since then the device has seen over 10 million sales. Samsung is hopeful to bring the flexible screen to its popular smartphone, which at this time scheduled to launch in first early half of 2012.

“The flexible display, we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part,” said spokesman Robert Yi during an earnings call. “The application probably will start from the handset side.”

The technology is not new to us as the Korean-based company has shown it at a number of different events before. However, it was not revealed on any of the occasion when the Korean electronics giant could incorporate this technology to its consumer products. The technology utilizes flexible OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diode to use in screens. The OLED is fitted in the rigid cases so as to keep the screens curved. OLED makes use of special material that insures each pixel produces light. The flexible screen will do better than traditional LCD screens, which not only require flexible screens but a backlight as well.

Despite the fact that the OLED technology has been around for quite some time, it was not as capable and reliable as it is at the moment to be used in electronic products.

On Friday, Samsung released a statement saying that regardless of the fact that company failed to perform well in last quarter, the Samsung has managed to exceed Apple in terms of shipments, reported Strategy Analytics. Samsung saw 300% increase in sales over the year.
