iPad Users Download Over 3 Million Apps Since Debut

ABI research stated that iPad users have downloaded 3 billion apps cumulatively since it debuted in 2010. This account for 19% of all cumulative downloads from the App Store. It also reflects that iPad has achieved the milestone half a year faster than the iPhone did after Apple introduced the App Store back in 2008.

On the other hand, ABI also reports that Android tablets as comparison only accounted for 440 million app downloads until now.

Lim Shiyang, a research associate says, “Discounting all those apps that were originally developed for Android smartphones, Android still trails greatly behind the iPad in terms of its tablet app offerings.”

Shiyang ascribes these lower numbers to the fact that Android tablets every so often experience fragmentation, stuck on older versions of OS, while new apps always in demand of latest versions of OS.

Shiyang further says, “Many Android tablets in the market are still using older versions of Android. which disadvantages users from enjoying the better effects of apps produced from more advanced software development kits.”

In addition to this, a large part of Android tablet market is based on low-end tablets that are not capable enough to compete with iPad’s user experience.

The company has also made some predictions regarding the effects of the latest version of Android on tablet incursion for the operating system. It is said that Ice Cream Sandwich is the major factor causing uplift in the Android tablets sales, eventually resulting in more apps download.

One such prediction has been made in the past as well by the company at the launch of Gingerbread for tablets. However, the prediction has not yet made any impression as Android tablet market share is relatively smaller than that of Apple’s iPad. Now the coming time will suggest whether the ICS proved to be any success for the search giant when comparing with Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Nook, running a crooked versions of Android.

It has also been predicted by ABI that Android app downloads for tablets and smartphones will reach 58 billion by the end of 2016, while Apple’s iPhone will have 27 billion. For the third quarter of 2011, developers developed 120,000 apps particularly for Apple’s tablet. However, ABI hasn’t made any estimates about downloads of Android and iPad apps individually.
