In technology, today’s world is very different as that of years ago. Before the invention of Flash memory in the mid 80s only simplest type of ROM was known to people. Then after Flash memory, Toshiba invented NAND flash which has higher tolerance of physical shock, extreme miniaturization, and much lower power consumption. But researchers didn’t stop there, and in early 2008 Stuart Parkin of IBM’s Almaden Research Center came up with the concept of retrievable stored memory “Racetrack Memory”. When Parkin first proposed racetrack memory, people thought it was a great idea that would never work. But researchers at IBM’s research center did it.

Now if we want a computer with shock proof memory that is 100,000 times faster than current hard disks, Not only faster but also more efficient and consumes less power then now it could be available in 5-7 years. Researchers at the Laboratory of Nanomagnetism and Spin Dynamics have invented such kind of “Racetrack” non volatile memory, which may soon make such a device possible.

Instead of on a moving tape, Racetrack Memory, a non volatile in nature, stores data on a tiny unmoving nickel iron nanowire. It has no moving parts, no wear-out mechanism like Flash memory therefore it can be rewritten endlessly without any wear and tear. The bits of information stored in the wire are simply pushed around inside the tape using a spin polarized current, attaining the breakneck speed of several hundred meters per second. It is equivalent of reading an entire VHS cassette in less than one second. It is cheaper as compare to other memory devices and much faster then traditional ROM, Computer with Racetrack memory can boot up instantly and would save energy.

Racetrack memory requires in a first step, replacing the USB sticks with something much faster, unlimited re-writ ability, etc then replaces all memory with Racetracks and this would greatly simplify the computer architecture but would mean that computers have to be redesigned.

Now by using Racetrack memory not only we can speed up our computer, but also can save energy of earth.

[STUDY] Google URL Shortener, Goo.gl is Fastest

Recently, Google has introduced its URL shortener, Goo.gl that is open for everyone. It has given its own website very similar to that of Bit.ly’s. Earlier, this service was only available for the Google’s own services.

A statement made by the Google states, “we want this URL shortener to be the steadier, fastest and most secure on the web.”

Pingdom used its own monitoring service to monitor the performance and reliability together with other URL shortening services such as bit.ly, TinyURL etc for a couple of weeks right after the Goo.gl became available.

Testing What Matters

The main focus was to check the reliability and performance of shortened URLs, i.e. to check how much overhead does the different URL add and either they work or not. Let us take it in this way that our major concern is to compare the time it takes to go to a site directly with the time it takes to go to a site by means of URL shortener.

There are many URL shorteners that are application-specific such as t.co of Twitter, wp.me of WordPress.com and so on. These shorteners don’t allow you to create your own short URLs and hence are not included in this test. This test was based on comparable services like Goo.gl and Bit.ly.

The chain of these continuous tests spread out over 25 locations scattered over North America and Europe. The tests were performed every minute for 15 days, so the results given are for the 21,600 tests per URL shortener.

Performance Overhead

What actually happens is that instead of going directly to the site, the overhead first have to ask the servers of the URL shortener about their destination and eventually these are redirected to the actual target.

You can clearly see that the overhead adds vary a lot not just between various URL shorteners but also between diverse geographical regions.

The chart reading will show you the extra time a URL shortener adds when reaching a site. The list is sorted in a descending order of total average.

A few observations:

The test results reveal that Goo.gl is 3x times faster than Bit.ly. You can see a big difference outside North America, where Goo.gl is more than 4x faster. This might be due the fact that Google has more servers in more locations. Goo.gl is 2x faster in North America because Bit.ly has its server in North America.

An interesting number you can see in the graph where Goo.gl was beaten by Is.gd in Europe. This might be due to the fact that Is.gd has more servers in Europe than Google.

Where there is a close competition, you can see a drastic difference between the European and North American results for the Goo.gl and Twurl. In this case, Goo.gl is almost 9x faster than Twurl.

*2x faster means, “The same thing adds half as much overhead.”

Reliability

You have just seen the performance overheads in the above chart; the following are given the statistics for the reliability of these URL services.

Once again we want to clear here that the “estimated downtime in a year” is based on 15 days of monitoring and therefore the estimated uptime is also based on this testing period.

*Bit.ly, Goo.gl and Is.gd seem in close proximity in terms of their availability.

*TinyURL and Ow.ly are also acceptable with 99.95% uptime.

Verdict

Undoubtedly, the statistics shows that Google indeed has managed to create a very fast URL shortener. Google clearly overshadows the other services in this test.

It is important to mention here that speed isn’t necessarily everything as many people use URL shorteners for various reasons. Therefore, on the basis of statistics given in this article we cannot say that goo.gl is the best URL shortener. However, it is the fastest and makes us realize that Google has delivered what the promised.

For downloading the CSV file, click on export and then click of Microsoft Outlook. It will prompt you to save the file. Click on Save and you are done.

Once the file is saved on your computer, you can import this CSV file into LinkedIn, Gmail Contacts or even in your phone address book.

If you are unable to download the contacts, go to your Facebook Account. Open “Application Settings” and remove the “Yahoo! Contact Importer” from the list. Repeat the above mentioned process again.

Google Android Hits 100K Apps

With growing demand of the wireless networks and geeky technical specifications, the applications available for Smartphone have become a major product differentiator. Due to this reason, the news that Google’s Android platform hit 100k apps on Monday sent shivers to the tech world and dozens of blogs weighing in.

According to CNNMoney, Apple has been the acknowledged leader in apps and its store offers three times as many mobile applications than Google’s Android market. It is estimated that Apple Store offers over 280k apps.

According to the blog GigaOm, “This certainly put Android Market on a firm growth pace. Apple’s App Store is still ahead by a big margin. The Apple App Store opened July 10, 2008 and achieved the landmark of 100k apps in just 482 days while Android Market started on October, 2008 and took almost 733 days to achieve this landmark. No doubt, Apple is far ahead with a remarkable amount of momentum and it is tough for its rivals to catch up to it.

Untouched by the viewpoint of GigaOm, Computerworld gives five reasons that Android is sure to outrun Apple as the leader in mobile applications. One such reason is that the people who create apps are now taking interest in Android apps and another solid reason given by Computerworld is, “Apple not only censor apps but it also sets some harsh rules about what sort of development tools a developer should use to build apps. Android doesn’t favor any such rules.”

PCWorld holds the same concept as that of GigaOm. It also presents the same justification that is presented by GigaOm that Android Market is a littler slower in bringing their apps to market than its counterpart. Also Android doesn’t have any monetary rewards for those selling them, but Apple do offer to some of its developers.

The competition is not just limited to these two. There are of course other mobile operating systems. For instance, Blackberry holds the market for Smartphone in the United States and not to forget about the Nokia who is the acknowledged worldwide leader.

Well, in United States Google and Apple certainly has a brisk competition. Of course the battle is between who offers the coolest, smarter and most forward thinking Smartphone in the market. Here, we cannot leave the importance of apps out of the topic. They have their own role to play in this battle.

Exposed! PTCL Revised Student Broadband Package

A while ago PTCL Broadband limited the Student Package to 1MBPS. Now PTCL has ‘revised’ the student package and added 150 ‘free voice minutes’ to the package ‘silently’ increasing the price of package from Rs. 840 to Rs. 850. And also added Rs. 150 to the package for so-called free voice minutes. The total now is Rs. 999/- for 1 MBPS package with 150 not-so-free voice minutes.

Decide Yourself

PTCL claims to provide free E-Learning cards to all who sign up before 31 December 2010 but there is NOTHING FREE.
You never get response from easylearning@ptcl.net.pk regarding e-learning. If you contact Sebera, they send you back to easylearning@ptcl.net.pk.
You HAVE TO PAY RS. 150/- even if you don’t use the voice minutes.
Package Price is cleverly increased by Rs. 10. (from PKR 840 – PKR 850) as they did before introducing 1 minute package and gave it name of New Package.

Conclusion

The new PTCL Student Package sucks big time. Gives no incentive but robbing the students. PTCL usually don’t take customers’ consent before enabling these student packages. The package is nothing but a big damn blunder from beginner to end.

ZONG Android IDEOS Priced at PKR 15,999/-

Today, PTCL Broadband has announced a new package of 10 MBPS for Rs. 9,999/- per month with unlimited bandwidth. Currently, PTCL Broadband is offering five packages which are;

Also, most of the country’s telephone lines are on Copper, so, customer on Copper lines may not avail this facility. Copper lines can only support data rate of 2-4 MBPS. In big cities, PTCL is switching from old copper lines to FiberOptics which may support the high speed 10 MBPS data rate .

Having said that, PTCL customer support and after sales service is not up to the mark. Which really needs improvement.
