Microsoft in Works to Bring Kinect to laptops

Microsoft is pretty much sure about the fact that it is on the top when it comes to its Kinect accessory. The Redmond-based software giant has already sold 18 million units since its launch a year ago. The company has recently made an announcement saying that the product will soon be available for desktop PCs.

In addition to this, Microsoft is also reportedly aiming to integrate its technology in laptops along with other portable devices.

The Daily had got the chance to have a look at two prototype devices from ASUS running Windows 8, featuring Kinect sensors all along the top of screen, while with a set of LEDs running alongside bottom.

Although, The News Corp. publication didn’t give us any hint of how the device could be used, a source confirmed that the devices were official prototypes of laptops featuring Kinect sensor.

With the Kinect’s wireless technology, laptops users will be able to communicate with their Windows 8 installation and related apps along with offering new methods to play games with portable devices for handicap users.

It is worth noting here that ASUS has been in works with PrimeSense to integrate Kinect-like technology into its new devices as proclaimed at CES 2012. Taken that PrimeSense adds some of its technology in Microsoft’s own offering, The Daily would have linked Microsoft’s Kinect branding with ASUS’ own developments.

Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft said at CES 2012 that its company will start offering its Kinect gaming accessories for Windows in twelve countries all across the world from February 1^st for $249.99. Moreover, there will also be a gesture-based product offered in countries including, United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom.

At the CES, Samsung has brought one of the coolest products in Las Vegas known as Samsung Smart Window. The South Korean company has uploaded an official video demo of the product. We have come to know about another interesting gossip about the product; it partially if not entirely gets its power from the sun. The product needs only 10% of normal power consumption.

This certainly justifiable as the impressive transparent gadget is a tactful substitute for a window. Moreover, Minority Report declared it not only cool but also eco-friendly. The Smart Window managed to get a great deal of attraction at the CES 2012 Innovation award which isn’t surprising. The video embedded below will certainly give you a reason to buy this if others fail to convince you.

However, what is missing the release date and pricing plan of this wonderful Samsung Transparent Smart Window. If we look at the video closely, we will find it positioned in the kitchen that give us a hint that it may not be as expensive as it looks like. The fact is that Samsung can put any price tag on this geeky product considering the attention it drew at the event. We hope that the South Korean company won’t let us wait for long and announce its releasing date and price plan soon.

Microsoft Aiming for HD Set-Top Box with Kinect Integration

The Daily reports that Microsoft is preparing a set-top box in which the Redmond-based company adds Kinect features, whereas as connecting it with several music and video services.

Moreover, the device will also include different apps and games. Microsoft describes its device as an entertainment-specific media hub. Also, the company will keep its device completely a different product to the Xbox 360 compared to other peripheral. The Redmond-based company has not yet disclosed much about it; however, it is currently named as “Live Xbox”, “Kinect Box” and “Kinect HD”. What we assume that the latter name is the one most suitable for the device as one cannot rollout the importance of HD in the name.

Prior to this news, Microsoft has announced that it is holding back the plans for a video subscription service in Xbox Live. However, the company ensures that it won’t have any impact on this entirely different project. Although. There is not much information available, but it is speculated that the Kinect HD is supposed to be “a low-profile version of the Kinect with a larger base.” In order to keep it simple and clutter-free, Microsoft will launch it will a single cable which “branches out to HDMI, power and USB.” The device is yet to be designed and it is not known whether optical audio parts and other related components would be included.

Where there are rumblings related to Apple’s plans for voice-activated television in the shape of iTV, several consumer electronics firms are inspecting and planning to introduce interactivity for our TV sets. It doesn’t mean at all that they are thinking to remove remote controls entirely from the scene, however, the Xbox Companion app released recently to Windows Phone users could be used in place of a remote control. All these details are currently based on speculations and what actually been in the work is still to be disclosed by Microsoft.

The gadget is primarily scheduled to launch sometime later this year. However, The Daily assumes that it will perhaps release prior to the new Xbox console with a price tag of around $150.

Microsoft Sold Over 1.7 Million Xbox in November

The projections and estimates made by analysts are always skeptical. Earlier this month, analysts assumed that Microsoft may have sold 1.44 million Xbox in November. However, Microsoft’s Xbox has done far better than the estimates. The software giant while quoting the NPD group said that it has sold more than 1.7 million Xbox 360s in the United States alone in the month of November.

Undoubtedly, Microsoft’s Xbox is doing far better than expected by analysts. This is obvious from the fact that the actual numbers of Xbox sold last month which is clearly greater than the estimates.

We have heard time and again that the next generation Xbox console is going to be announced at E3 next year. This will put ‘end of life’ to the current model, the 360 early next year. The current figures show that how popular the device is and how long the lifespan of the current generation consoles has extended.

Here, we cannot ignore the vital role played by Kinect that help rejuvenating the Xbox range. As soon as it launched, it became one of the fastest selling consumer devices of all time. According to Microsoft, it sold around 750,000 Kinect sensors during the Black Friday week.

The first-generation Kinect has been a major hit for Microsoft. It was the product that not only re-energized the aging Xbox 360 but also brought a new trend to the Microsoft larger brand.

Now Microsoft is all set to launch its second-generation Kinect, dubbed Kinect 2. It is assumed that the next generation of the motion capturing product line will appear to be equally powerful and successful like its predecessor. We have come across several rumors suggesting that the Kinect, popular for its technological capabilities, is moving a step further in its capabilities.

A dedicated gaming news website EuroGamer reports that the Kinect 2 has a new powerful feature that makes it “so accurate [that] it can lip read.” Some other sources claims, “[the] Kinect 2 will come bundled with future Xbox consoles.” Microsoft has made Kinect a fundamental part of the Xbox, offering it with the console. Microsoft showed off its new Touch Sensitive Technology last week. What we going to discuss here is its new project with Carnegie Mellon University, which is soon to be the future.

The new project dubbed OmniTouch has the capability of turning any surface into a touchscreen. This has been made possible with a shoulder-mounted device that is equally pico-projector and Kinect.

With this technology, you need not to have a tablet PC, all you need to have is just a paper tablet. You will certainly be amazed to see how this works. For instance, you need to use your hand to run apps, just hold it out and you will have proper buttons to navigate around.

I must sure that you will be amazed to see how it works. If you want to check an email, just go near the wall to project a display. You can even finger paint the wall, considering your hand a palette. With OmniTouch, you can even use your hand as an interim interface, especially when you need to project display on the desk or table.

In last decade or two, technology has developed manifolds. Once there was no concept of wireless telecommunication and now we have modern and advanced telecommunication system with loads of mobile phones with latest technologies. Samsung Claims Significant Development in LED Technology

It is revealed earlier today by Korean tech giant Samsung that its engineers working with advanced LED technologies has made some remarkable progress, enabling the company to manufacture super- large advanced display panels on ordinary glass, such as window panes. The company also hinted that the coming few years would double window pane as lighting and display screens.

According to the Korea Herald, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology has effectively fabricated almost “single crystalline Gallium Nitride on amorphous glass substrates,” a landmark that will allow Korean company to produce large-sized LED display, using glass substrates.

It will be extremely useful for the LED industry to use glass substrates instead of sapphire substrates to produce mega-sized products so as to reduce the cost of production.

One of the researchers who is also part of the project at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology says, “In ten years, window panes will double as lighting and display screens, giving personality to buildings.”

The company further explains that the current LED products available in the market are 2-inch in size, while the products produced from new technology will allow us to produce products 400 times larger than the existing LED products.

ARCHOS has finally announced the release dates for its forthcoming chain of G9 Android Tablets which hold the promise of bringing both speed and affordability in a single gadget. The initial price set for this device is US$299.

The next to join the party is Turbo edition that will be available from October. It will launch with 1.5GHz OMAP 4 (dual-core processor), offering almost 50 percent more computational power compared to other 1GHz devices and 16GB of flash storage. It will be offered with a price tag of US$329. There will be another version with a 250GB Seagate Momentus Thin HDD featuring an intelligent cache system utilizing 4GB of devoted memory to speed up the device. It will cost US$369.

There is another device ARCHOS 101 featuring a 10″, 1280×800 pixel resolution. It will also be available from October in two versions – the 16GB flash storage with 1.5GHz processor costing US$399 and the 250GB HDD with 1.5GHz processor costing US$469.

The ARCHOS G9 Tablets show a support for wide range of video file formats including RM, RMVB, MOV, MPG, AVI, MP4, PS, ASF, TS, VOB, MKV, FLV and 3GP. In addition to these, the devices also show support for some audio and image formats including OGG Vorbis, FLAC, MP3, AAC3, AAC+ 5.13, and WAV (PCM/ADPCM).

Both the devices will come with preinstalled Google mobile applications including Google Talk with video chat, Gmail, Google Maps, and Navigation (beta) and Google Calendar. The devices feature a Lithium Polymer batter with a playback time of 36 hours, i.e. 7 hours of video playback and 10 hours of music playback.

Apparently, the detail provided by ARCHOS for their G9 breed of Tablets seems very impressive. One should certainly look forward to have one in his/her hand to see whether the device is actually speak practically for what being said for it or not.

Sony Unveils the First Android-based Walkman

The first Android-based Walkman media player, the Z-1000 has been rolled out by Sony. The Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is running on it and is supposed to compete with iPod Touch with its 4.3-inch WVGA (400×800) touchscreen, 512MB of RAM and NVIDIA Tegra 2.1GHz dual-core CPU platform.

Furthermore, the NW-Z1000 features an “S-Master MX” sound processing system, digital noise-cancellation and a devoted “W” button for the music player application. It also allows installing or adding additional apps through Android Market.

The Z-1000 will show a good support for many music file formats such as MPEG-4, AVC, WMV (offers Full HD 1080p video playback at 30fps), MP3, AAC, HE-AAC, WMA, ATRAC and ATRAC Advanced lossless.

It also has a good number of connectivity options including; Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, GPS, DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 (supporting EDR, AVRCP, A2DP, and OPP profiles) and HDMI output. Some of the other features this device hold are digital compass, FM radio, G-sensor, a lithium ion battery (offering 20 hours of music and 5 hours of video playback time), and a built-in mono-speaker.

If we talk about its dimensions, it has 134.4 × 70.9 × 11.1 mm (5.29 x 2.79 x 0.4 inch) with a weight of 156 g (5.5 oz).

Three different versions of Sony Walkman NW-Z1000 will be available – 16GB, 32 GB and 64 GB with a price tag of ¥28,000 ($365USD), ¥33,000 ($430 USD) and ¥43,000 ($561USD) respectively. This remarkable device is supposed to make its official debut in Japan on December 10, 2011. However, it is yet not known when this Walkman is offered in other countries.
