A research firm, comScore reveals that Microsoft’s search engine Bing outrun Yahoo in the market share for the first time in December 2011. This makes the Bing the number 2 search engine trailing the search giant Google.

According to research firm, in December, the Bing saw a growth of 15.1% because Yahoo saw a decline of 0.6% in its market share during the same month. The figures collected in November showed a tie between both the search engines.

Nonetheless, the victory over Yahoo led the team behind the three years old search engine to over joy at Microsoft. The results of 2010 for the same month shows that Yahoo was ahead with 16% share compared to 12% share of Bing. It took quite a long for Microsoft to see things going their way finally. The growth shown by Bing will certainly help lift the company’s earnings.

The current figures also demonstrate Yahoo’s constant decline. Yahoo was once the number 1 search engine all over the world, but lost its title in the hands of Google back in 2000. In the same year, Google became the default search provider of Yahoo. However, in 2004, both companies agreed to end their partnership. It is from this point Yahoo has been struggling to keep its market share intact. Yahoo has been trying hard to regain its lost status through making necessary changes to its management and board of directors. It has already experimented with several CEOs with PayPal’s Scott Thompson currently hold the position.

Google is currently a search giant with a market share of 65.9%, according to comScore. It saw a growth of 0.5% in December. Both Yahoo and Bing are far behind in race and it will require hard work to decrease this massive gap.

In the recent few years, mobile phones have become an essential part of everyday life. With the increasing use of mobile phones, the trend of text messaging has also increased. A survey was conducted in 21 countries about cellphone users regarding their mobile habits that revealed that 75% of the cellphone users send text messages.

A study was conducted by a Pew Research Center Global Attitudes Project that focused on the global use of digital communication tools, including mobile and social networks. Unsurprisingly, the research revealed that both young and educated are the first to adopt new technologies. While people less than 30 year of age with college degrees are more into exploring mobile phone functions and social networks.

One-half of the participants send photos or videos, while only 23% of them use the Internet.

Such behaviors are usually associated with most well-developed countries because there is a big reason to assume so, but to your utter surprise texting is most popular in Kenya and Indonesia, the two poorest countries, according to study. The study further reveals that sending photos and videos is most popular in Japan (72%), then Mexico with 61%, Spain with 59%, follow by Egypt with 58%. As for using mobile data, it seems that the trend is most popular in developed countries with Israel and Japan sharing the top spot with 47%, followed by 43% in US. Complete results are given in the table.

The study also focused on examining the worldwide popularity of social networking. It is a matter of common observation that social networking is common in countries where Internet access isn’t a major issue. Considering this point, Israel is on the top with 53% usage, followed by 50% in US, and then comes Britain and Russia with 43% each, slightly trailed by Spain with 42%. Interestingly, the users in non-developed countries use social network not less than the richer countries.

The study was conducted from March 21 to May 15. It surveyed about 700 to 4,029 mobile users per country by telephone, while in person in the countries like US, Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, China, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Mexico and Kenya.

Market research firm, Gartner has predicted tremendous growth in smartphone market in coming years. According to the research, Symbian market share will decrease and fall under double figures whereas, Android will be leading the market with almost half the market share by the year 2012.

Gartner predicts that the worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million unit in 2011 and Android will lead with 38.5% of total market. Android market share will increase to 49.9% by 2012.

Based on Andriod previous records, we are optimistic that there will be a significant growth in next couple of years but it will lose some of its market share after three years. Symbian which is becoming obsolete with the passage of time will command a nominal share of 0.1% by 2015. Windows Phone 7 market share is expected to grow to 10.8%, which will continue increasing to 19.5% in 2015.

Apple iOS and Blackberry will hold 17.2% and 11.1% market shares in 2015 respectively. Other platforms are estimated to grow to 3.3% market share.

We are skeptical about Windows Phone 7 being on number two on the smartphone market. The reason is that anything can happen with Microsoft and Nokia’s partnership in next couple of years. Also Apple is playing its cards very carefully when it comes to iPhone and other iOS devices.

Recently, Forbes and Reputation Institute unveiled the list of most reputable companies. Interestingly, the list suggests that the Cupertinos are a step above than the Redmondians. Another surprising fact that list revealed to us is that Google is on the top of both Apple and Microsoft.

Google is not only the Internet giant but also has a repute of making Android. Well! This Internet search giant way ahead of Microsoft and Apple with holding a 9th position in the list. There is no doubt about that as it position among other companies says it all.

Apart from these, Amazon is ranked the world’s topmost company for the fact:

Amazon is the most reputable company in the U.S. in 2011 because consumers believe that it stands for more than what it sells. Its enterprise-wide story engages consumers in more than just delivering innovative products and services, a trustworthy and ethical customer experience or strong financial performance. The whole really is greater than the sum of the parts with Amazon, and this holistic perception creates a meaningful connection between Amazon and consumers, resulting in an excellent reputation score.

This judgment is based on a survey conducted in January 2011 and more than 32,000 people Share their opinion in this regard.

Mac has gain a lot of popularity in recent few years and there are many countries having a good Mac market share. But here the point is which country has a major Mac market share. For this, we have considered the OS X market share figures from all over the world to determine that which particular country has the highest Mac OS X market share.

For many of you United States being a home market for Apple should lead the list, but this is in fact not the case. There are many different things that one needs to consider while determining the market shares.

The Most Mac-Friendly Countries

We turned to StatCounter to have a look at desktop OS market share data. The data provided by StatCounter is established upon visitor stats taken from over three million websites. We paid attention to the month of February, 2011 to obtain the most recent figures.

By analyzing different figures, we deduced that the top ten most Mac-friendly countries are Switzerland, Luxembourg, the United States, Iceland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark and Singapore.

Above: The 10 most Mac-friendly countries given in descending order of their market share.

There are certain other countries having a small Mac market share such as Sweden, Japan, United Kingdom, Finland, Belgium and France.

The Most Mac-Friendly World Regions

Apart from individual countries, it is also necessary to analyze the Mac market share in different world regions.

Talking about the world regions, it seems that United States has made a comeback in this category with having North America at the top of the list. Oceania is on second and Europe is third in the list. It has seen that in Asia, Africa and South America, Mac has less than 2 percent of market share.

Above: World regions with highest Mac market share.

It is important to reveal other important figures regarding the Mac market share is of sub-region of Europe. All the five Nordic countries are included in the list of top ten countries with three holding the top positions.

Conclusion

Apple has gained a lot of popularity with its products like iPod, iPhone, and its recently introduced iPad. Apple is also selling personal computers. But Apple’s Mac computer doesn’t have such a high number of users in the world as for its other products. However, its Mac computers do have a market share and becoming more popular and considered the far-off competitor of Windows- based personal computers.

Recently, Google has introduced its URL shortener, Goo.gl that is open for everyone. It has given its own website very similar to that of Bit.ly’s. Earlier, this service was only available for the Google’s own services.

A statement made by the Google states, “we want this URL shortener to be the steadier, fastest and most secure on the web.”

Pingdom used its own monitoring service to monitor the performance and reliability together with other URL shortening services such as bit.ly, TinyURL etc for a couple of weeks right after the Goo.gl became available.

Testing What Matters

The main focus was to check the reliability and performance of shortened URLs, i.e. to check how much overhead does the different URL add and either they work or not. Let us take it in this way that our major concern is to compare the time it takes to go to a site directly with the time it takes to go to a site by means of URL shortener.

There are many URL shorteners that are application-specific such as t.co of Twitter, wp.me of WordPress.com and so on. These shorteners don’t allow you to create your own short URLs and hence are not included in this test. This test was based on comparable services like Goo.gl and Bit.ly.

The chain of these continuous tests spread out over 25 locations scattered over North America and Europe. The tests were performed every minute for 15 days, so the results given are for the 21,600 tests per URL shortener.

Performance Overhead

What actually happens is that instead of going directly to the site, the overhead first have to ask the servers of the URL shortener about their destination and eventually these are redirected to the actual target.

You can clearly see that the overhead adds vary a lot not just between various URL shorteners but also between diverse geographical regions.

The chart reading will show you the extra time a URL shortener adds when reaching a site. The list is sorted in a descending order of total average.

A few observations:

The test results reveal that Goo.gl is 3x times faster than Bit.ly. You can see a big difference outside North America, where Goo.gl is more than 4x faster. This might be due the fact that Google has more servers in more locations. Goo.gl is 2x faster in North America because Bit.ly has its server in North America.

An interesting number you can see in the graph where Goo.gl was beaten by Is.gd in Europe. This might be due to the fact that Is.gd has more servers in Europe than Google.

Where there is a close competition, you can see a drastic difference between the European and North American results for the Goo.gl and Twurl. In this case, Goo.gl is almost 9x faster than Twurl.

*2x faster means, “The same thing adds half as much overhead.”

Reliability

You have just seen the performance overheads in the above chart; the following are given the statistics for the reliability of these URL services.

Forwarding reliability for URL shorteners, October 12 – October 27, 2010

URL Shortener

Uptime

Estimated downtime in a year (hours)

Goo.gl

100.00%

0.0

Bit.ly

100.00%

0.0

Is.gd

99.99%

0.9

TinyURL

99.95%

4.4

Ow.ly

99.95%

4.4

Snipurl

99.52%

42.0

Twurl

99.29%

62.2

Once again we want to clear here that the “estimated downtime in a year” is based on 15 days of monitoring and therefore the estimated uptime is also based on this testing period.

*Bit.ly, Goo.gl and Is.gd seem in close proximity in terms of their availability.

*TinyURL and Ow.ly are also acceptable with 99.95% uptime.

Verdict

Undoubtedly, the statistics shows that Google indeed has managed to create a very fast URL shortener. Google clearly overshadows the other services in this test.

It is important to mention here that speed isn’t necessarily everything as many people use URL shorteners for various reasons. Therefore, on the basis of statistics given in this article we cannot say that goo.gl is the best URL shortener. However, it is the fastest and makes us realize that Google has delivered what the promised.

There is a general concept that social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter has a negative impact on our social lives. A study has been conducted by ExactTarget and CoTweet to probe deep down into the issue and look out for the actual facts regarding these social networking websites. You may be surprised to know that the reports are pretty good as far as these social networking behemoths are concerned. These networks are not having any negative impact on our face to face relations, according to report.

The report which is called Social Mythbuting ranked seven in the “Subscribers, Fans and Followers” research series from email marketing provider ExactTarget and its social management tool CoTweet.

The study was actually conducted in two phases:

Firstly, a series of focus groups containing 44 people were selected that centers around the reasons users quote for engaging with companies via Facebook, Twitter and email.

Secondly, a survey of 1,506 U.S. citizens of ages fifteen and older who played off of themes addressed during the focus groups.

In a realistic manner, the research presented the actual facts about these social networking websites. According to the research, 27% of the people who use Facebook say that they hang out with their friends quite often and only thirteen percent of the people say that there is a considerable change in their face to face interaction.

Almost same results go for the Twitter lovers. About 47% of the people using Twitter say that there is no change in their face to face interaction with friends and only 7% of the people on twitter say the opposite.

So, it is clear from the study reports that more of the users on Facebook and Twitter feel that these social networking media has no impact on their social lives.

Texting, the activity of sending text messages via your cell phone, is increasing in popularity among teens, which have been logged as sending more than 3,000 text messages in one month. This, the math shows, is equal to 6 texts an hour. On average, both sexes included, teen users of cell phones send out roughly 3,339 text messages a month, which breaks down into 4,050 texts/ month for girls and 2,539 texts/month for boys.

Statistics

This data was collected by the Nielsen poll group, in a monster study looking at the texting habits of over 60,000 cell phone users and more than 3,000 US teens from April-June 2010. Naturally, part of this is due to the increase in downloadable applications on the iPhone and similar devices, which encourage sending out text messages, as well as the increasing numbers of children who have gain access to cell phones.

The most text-savvy demographics were teens aged 13-17, i.e. newly pubescent teenagers who were likely getting their first taste of freedom and social interaction. The number of texts they sent out is astounding, and constantly rising, with no end seemingly in sight – this number represents an increase of 8% over the statistical survey data collected in 2009. As mentioned above, girls outnumber and outdo boys in the texting stakes by over 1,500 texts on average per month.

In contrast, look at the 18-24 year age bracket. They lag far behind in the poll, with an average of just 1,630 texts/month. While the count of text messages sent out by each demographic has risen across the board since last year, the number sent out by every group over 13-17 just declines sharply after that age grouping. Therefore texting has risen in importance and use – the only difference is it has risen far more sharply in 13-17 year olds than any other demographic.

New Era

From 2008-2010, a massive shift in cell phone usage has happened, primarily in the reasons why teens buy cell phones. Whereas the main reason for having one used to be for safety’s sake, the reason now is texting – that was the reason given by 43% of teenagers. It has even overtaken voice calling, being called ‘faster’ and ‘easier’ by 20% and 22% respectively of teens. The highest number of voice calls made is among 18-24 year olds, and every age demographic above 13-17 years uses voice calling features more than the teens.

This is matched by increases in data usage and application downloads among teens – from 14 to 62 MB of downloads per month, with teen males using over 20 MB more than females. This has led many to ask: is there a ceiling? Where does the texting craze end? Is there a natural limit to this activity, or is it bound to become as natural as breathing?

Internet is used globally and every user has his own preferences regarding websites. We tried to figure out that what kind of websites get the most page views and it is for this reason Pingdom.com examined the top 1,000 websites on the Internet to discover the truth.

Our main focus was on monthly page views per unique visitor. To compute these statistics we made use of traffic data from Google AD Planner, and finally sorted out a top list of page views per visitor. The results are pretty much expected, though still interesting.

Page Views per Visitor Top 10

The top eight results are pretty much expected as these all are social networks.

Although, the numbers of page views per visitor for Facebook are really striking, the Orkut’s Brazilian site has even better than Facebook, according to the Ad Planner data. The Orkut’s Brazilian site has 61% more page views per visitor than Facebook.

Definitely these numbers clearly shows that how popular Orkut is in Brazil, because the page views per visitor for global Orkut site is far less than that of Brazilian Orkut site, i.e. less than one twelfth or 142 monthly page views per visitor. This shows us that only site design is not the issue there are other factors, such as market penetration and demographics that play there role as well.

The data contains another site that surpasses the number of page views per visitors of Facebook. The site is Tuenti or also known as Spanish Facebook.

Another site that bests Facebook in terms of page views per visitor is a social network called Tuenti, sometimes called the “Spanish Facebook.”

Overall Page View Dominance

According to statistics, Facebook didn’t rank on the top in terms of page views per visitor, but it definitely outclasses all the other websites in terms of total page views each month. One major reason for this is that it has large number of visitors. The estimated number of monthly page views of Facebook is around 630 billion.

Keeping in view all the statistics, it is not wrong to say that only Facebook among the top 100 websites on the Internet accounts for 54% of the page views. These measures don’t include the Google search, as it is not included in Google Ad Planner.

All the nine social networks present in the top 100 websites on the Internet including Facebook make up the 65% of the total page views.

Why it Matters

Although, it seems quite awkward to use page views per visitor to measure the site popularity, it is somehow a useful way. If your site is getting a lot of page views from its user, then the things must be going in the right direction for you.

Nowadays, popular sites are a good source of advertisement. These sites serve ads to make money. The more page views mean more and more people are viewing those ads. Many people think that social networks are the ideal advertising driven websites. This might be true to some extent, but in fact these networks focus more on their users’ information than other sites. A sort of addictive type of service inspires users to visit the pages and in turn raises the page views per user in turn.

In this article we will through some light on the state of the Internet in Europe. This should be done with a focus on two main points, i.e. which countries in the Europe have most Internet users and which countries have the highest penetration of the Internet.

There is still a concept about European Union as being equivalent of the United States for some peoples, but in fact this is not the case. Europe is such a diverse market with large number of countries and different languages. This evidence is enough to look at each and every country separately in terms of their Internet penetrations and users.

The Internet in Europe

Following are given some facts related to the state of Internet in Europe:

Germany has the more number of Internet users in Europe, i.e. 65 million.

The Vatican City State in Europe has the least number of Internet users, i.e. 93 Internet users with a total population of 829.

The total number of Internet users in Europe alone is 475 million; remember the worldwide users are around 1.97 billion.

Europe alone holds 24.2% of the world’s Internet users.

As compared to United States, Europe has twice as many Internet users.

The average Internet penetration across Europe is 58.4%.

Ten European countries have more than 10 million Internet users.

Iceland has the highest Internet penetration with 97.5% followed by Norway and Sweden. Norway has 94.8% and Sweden has 92.5% Internet penetration. Except these three European countries no other European country has Internet penetration over 90%. United States has 77.3% of total Internet penetration. (internet penetration means the share of the population with internet)

Top Internet Populations in Europe

The following chart contains the list of top 20 countries in terms of Internet users:

The important here to mention is that both Turkey and Russia are only partially in Europe. For instance, Russia covers most of Eurasia.

European Countries with the Highest Internet Penetration

The last chart provides you the in information regarding the Internet population, but here we will talk about internet penetration. Remember, Internet penetration has nothing to do with population size. Internet penetration may be dependant on the infrastructure, and in this sense small countries may lead the larger ones as infrastructure demands are far smaller in scale than large countries.

The studies show that the Scandinavian countries are far ahead in Internet penetration than other European countries. For instance, Iceland, Norway and Sweden are all Scandinavian, holding the top three positions along with fifth (Denmark) and seventh (Finland), which are also Scandinavians.

As we talked above that smaller countries are doing extremely well in terms of Internet penetration because of having smaller scale infrastructures, for instance, Iceland (population: 309,000), Andorra (population: 84,525), Monaco (population: 30,586) and Liechtenstein (population: 35,002).

Final words

Unlike United States, Europe has much more diverse market with different countries and languages; still it has twice as many Internet users than United States. This article is a small attempt to give you an insight into how different European countries are competing with each other in terms of Internet users and Internet penetration.

Nobody can run away from the past. In today’s massively online network through computer, it is literally impossible to dump the past behind anymore. Social networking sites like Facebook where people posts pictures can pop up during a job interview and can make a difference overall changing one’s perspective. And that is not all; a legal investigation can dig the whole contents that are in computers from home or office which leads to uncover many details which may be incrimination and very inconvenient which could be very embarrassing sometime when someone gets those private information from the computers.

Now to avoid those unexpected encounter, the University of Washington has created a solution which can help such information to expire after putting up a certain period of time. Private details like emails, Facebook posts and chat messages do not exist because now they are automatically self destructed and totally impossible to retrieve from any websites including inboxes, outboxes and from personal computers. This is very impressive as even senders could retrieve that information if they want to.

Internet can be a very scary place, and if you are talking about the privacy, it could be like hell. A Scientist Tadayoshi Kohno, explains how internet is not very safe when we are dealing with private information. He continues how it is needed for people to understand the how and where emails are stored just because they will become more careful or maybe use very less than before.

So in order to feel safe in the internet, the researchers at UW computer have developed a system called Vanish. When anyone puts up private files through websites, that prototype can set a time limit which will destroy those information erasing the possibility of invasion from the bad guys. This project goes public today and the researcher will have a presentation at Usenix Security Symposium from August 10th to 14th in Montreal.

Anyone who uses computer long term, they are always under the hazards of back pain, blurred vision and mouse related injuries. This is increasing very rapidly and there has been lots of research. A recent study which was published in July 2009 from American Journal or Preventive Medicine, where many researchers from Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University College of Medicine, have concluded that they have found many case related to computer injuries like head injuries die to computer monitor falls, tripping over computer wires, components and many other physical accidents which case minor to serious injuries.

Data collected from National Electronic Injury Surveillance System shows that there were more than 78, 000 cases related to computer related injuries. These injuries took place between 1994 and 2006 and were treated in U.S. emergency departments. The study showed that such injuries (Approximately 93%) were occurred mostly at home which is very hard to believe. And over the period of 13 years, the research shows that such injuries have increased by 732%. And it is very shocking because that figure is two times the increase of computers in household which is just 309%.

Many injuries like hitting against computer equipments, tripping through wires or falling over computer equipment, computer falling and hitting the patient on the top, straining muscles and joints, and many others. Out of those injuries cases, the most injuries came from monitor related. A record shows that such injuries have increased notably. It was just 11.6% back in 2004 but in 2003 it increased to 37.1%. But in 2006, the rate of monitor related injuries have decreased to 25.1%, and it is due o replacement of CRT monitors by LCD monitors.

Scientists at the University of Cincinnati are developing a new invention nicknamed the “lab-on-a-tube” which measures several parameters of the brain simultaneously. It is being developed by Chunyan Li, PhD a student of Chong Ahn, PhD, in the electrical and computer engineering department.

This is a “smart sensor” that measures various changes in the human brain. It has the potential to be used for patients who have undergone accidents and traumatic incidents to the brain. The scientists at UC felt the need for an all-in-one multifunctional tube which measured parameters such as intracranial glucose, oxygen, temperature and pressure.

This tube initially removes excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain of the accident victim and begins to accurately measure changes. This device is being considered to be a ground breaking invention by the UC scientists and they say it will definitely break major barriers to quick administration of medicines to the affected patient.

Being developed at the BioMEMS Laboratory, this device can prevent secondary and traumatic injury to the brain caused by a fall incident. Increased pressure in the cranium, lessening of oxygen levels and sudden changes in the sugar (glucose) levels and temperature changes can be accurately kept track of using this. Animal testing is the next stage for the lab on a tube. Details about this device were published on the official website and scientific journals.

Even so soon further modification are being done on the 11 centimeters length by 1.7 millimeters diameter tube whose size is further being reduced and more detectable parameters are being added to the list making it much more sophisticated.
Physicians at the Neurotrauma Center at the UC Neuroscience Institute hope for the success of the lab-on-a-tube device that could change the way treatments are being performed on future victims of brain damage.

Scientists at Cornell University in the Department of Computer Science have discovered an algorithm which can synthesize the sound of water flowing. Until now the methods used to accurately reproduce the sounds made by water have been incomplete since there are situations where the complexity of predicting the sounds which would occur for a particular event is extremely computationally intensive and hence inefficient as a result

But now, Doug James an associate professor of computer science along with Changxi Zhen who is a research student in the area of sound synthesis contained in the Human Centered Computing Program are filling up sounds which were previously missing in the sound synthesis of water. This program is headed by Associate professor James, Kavita Bala and Steve Marschner who is the assistant professor and associate professor respectively at Cornell University. It is funded by a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is considered the first step to matching the images to their appropriate sounds.

The Foley artists who have the job of adding the sounds to the movie sets later on after the filming is done will find this technique being developed very useful. The major focus is Computer animated movies, but almost any movie will need these effects added on. Nowadays not many variations of sound are available due the limitations of current sound production facilities but with this technology records can be cued to fit the event shown on screen.

Sounds which are natural such as clapping hands, sound of the wind in trees and glass smashing on the floor need such an intricate algorithm to compute the sounds without much difference from the actual sound.

Not only such sounds, even random sounds like breaking glass, egg shells breaking, cracking objects, etc can be more accurately produced in the sound labs hence creating the ground work for more immersive virtual reality systems, movies and games.
