Telenor Pakistan Announces Solid Financial Results for Q4 2010

ISLAMABAD, February 8, 2011: Telenor Pakistan has announced results for the fourth quarter of 2010. Pakistan’s second largest cellular company continued to out-perform the industry by registering above average growth. At the end of Q4 2010, the number of subscribers reached 24.7 million, showing a year-on-year growth of 10%. EBITDA margin has remained strong in the quarter, growing by 9% as compared to the same period last year. The year closed with Telenor Pakistan retaining its subscriber market share of 24.5%.

Jon Eddy Abdullah, CEO Telenor Pakistan while commenting on the results said:

“I am pleased to share Telenor Pakistan’s latest financial results. These show sustained growth both in the last quarter of 2010 and throughout the year. Telenor Pakistan continues to show solid performance in the face of a number of challenges such as the widespread floods, power shortages and the security situation. For 2011, we look up to the government to rationalize the taxation structure for the telecom sector to ensure the industry continues to contribute long-term to the economy of Pakistan.”

In the previous quarter, Telenor Pakistan along with its partner Tameer Microfinance Bank received global recognition for easypaisa when they were presented the ‘Best Mobile Money Transfer Entrant of the Year Award’. Easypaisa was pitted against some of the leading mobile financial service providers in the world, such as Vodafone and Safaricom, and outshone mobile operators Grameenphone, Banglalink and Vodafone to become the winner.

Also in the previous quarter, as part of its Khuddar Pakistan Corporate Responsibility initiative, Telenor Pakistan organized the First National Virtual Leadership Conference on International Day of Persons with Disabilities in which disability leaders called for the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Jon Eddy Abdullah appointed new CEO of DTAC

Telenor Pakistan today announced that its CEO, Jon Eddy Abdullah, is set to leave the company on March 1^st. Jon has been appointed CEO of the Telenor Group’s Thai mobile operator DTAC.

“I am very pleased with Jon’s achievements as CEO of Telenor Pakistan. Under his leadership the company has strengthened its position as a leading mobile operator, launched several innovative services like easypaisa, and taken a clear position on corporate responsibility”, said Sigve Brekke, Executive Vice President of Telenor Group, and head of Telenor’s Asian Operations. “I am excited that the Telenor Group will continue to benefit from his vast telecommunication experience and his knowledge about Asia in another of our Asian markets”.

Telenor Pakistan has already started the process of finding a new Chief Executive Officer to succeed Jon.

Telenor and TransferTo Partner for International Top-Up Service

Telenor Pakistan and TransferTo, the international mobile airtime top-up network, have joined hands to enable International Top-Ups to Telenor subscribers from overseas, both companies announced today. Pakistanis living abroad can now conveniently top-up their loved ones’ phones with Telenor Pakistan airtime through any of TransferTo’s authorized partners, as well as the consumer-facing website, http://www.transferto.com.

Pakistani subscribers in Saudi Arabia, for example, can send Telenor Pakistan top-ups simply by SMS if they are STC subscribers, a TransferTo partner operator. The transaction is processed in real-time through TransferTo’s secure platform. Top-ups towards Telenor Pakistan on TransferTo can be as low as 100 rupees and as high as 5,000 rupees for any given transaction.

There are approximately 7 million Pakistanis living abroad. For many, topping up a phone in their home country is a great way to make a low cost, high value gift to friends and family on special occasions such as birthdays or religious holidays.

Easypaisa has won the award for ‘Best Mobile Money Transfer Entrant of the Year’ at the world’s first Mobile Money Transfer (MMT) Awards held in Dubai last week, making it the year’s best service of its kind in the world.

The service was pitted against some of the world’s leading mobile financial service providers such as Vodafone and Safaricom. In the winning category, easypaisa competed against Grameenphone, Banglalink and Vodafone to win the award. It was also the only service nominated by the jury in three of the six categories; the two other categories being ‘Most Inventive Marketing Campaign’ and ‘Achievement in Financial Inclusion’.

At last, they have filled their long vacant slot for the Director Corporate Communication and Responsibility.

Reports are confirmed that the Anjum Rahaman of Express 24/7 is going to take the charge as Director Corporate Communication and Responsibility at Telenor Pakistan.

Anjum Rahman will be expecting to take charge today, i.e. November 1, 2010 at the company’s headquarters in Islamabad.

Anjum Rahman is quite a renowned personality as she has already served Express 24/7 as Senior Producer/Special Correspondent. There she hosted TV news and current affair talk show ‘The Other Line’. For a small period of time, she has also contributed to The Express Tribune.

Before she became the part of Express group, she worked as Senior Media and Advocacy officer at the Canadian high Commission from 2004-2008 in Islamabad.

Telenor Shows Growth – Q3 2010 Results Declared

Telenor Pakistan has announced results for the third quarter of 2010. Pakistan’s second largest cellular company continues to show progress in a challenging business environment.

At the end of Q3, Telenor Pakistan subscribers numbered 23.84 million, which is a growth of 9.9% over the same period last year. Market share remained strong at 23%; EBIDTA margins were 29.7%.

Jon Eddy Abdullah, CEO Telenor Pakistan while commenting on the results said: “Telenor Pakistan continues to consolidate its business growth. The previous quarter saw Pakistan facing one of the worst floods in its history. Telenor Pakistan responded with concerted efforts, becoming the first and one of the largest corporate contributors to the relief drive. A calamity of the size we witnessed is bound to have some negative impact on the business environment of the country. However, this was minimized with the help of our teams and their well coordinated efforts.”

Telenor Pakistan also won several awards in the previous quarter: the Best Place to Work award, presented by Pakistan’s reputed HR associations, and the Best Practices Award, presented by The Data Warehousing Institute.

Easypaisa Completes One Year of Service

Easypaisa, a venture of Telenor Pakistan which provides branch-less banking facilities has successfully completed one year of operations. The service, which was launched jointly by Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank last year, has helped provide people across Pakistan with access to convenient and secure financial services.

Roar Bjærum, Vice President Financial Services, Telenor Pakistan while commenting on easypaisa’s one year of completion said: “Easypaisa is a uniquely convenient way for everyone to carry out financial transactions such as easypaisa money transfer and bill payments. More than six million transactions worth Rs10 billion have been moved through the system in this one year, with a million transactions worth nearly Rs2 billion moved in the last month alone. These numbers reflect our customers’ increased trust in the services. Our aim is to continue to change the way financial transactions are carried out in Pakistan, and to develop a portfolio of easypaisa services that meet different customer needs.”

Ali Abbas Sikander, Group Executive Director Technology & Operations, Tameer Microfinance Bank, speaking about the milestone said: “In Pakistan, there are currently an estimated 30 million economically active people who have no access to basic transactional services, let alone savings and other financial safety net solutions. The service, when it was launched a year ago, was available at 2,200 outlets. Currently, easypaisa services are available at more than 11,000 outlets in 700 urban and rural areas across Pakistan. The spread is even greater than the number of bank branches in Pakistan which is 8,000.

Easypaisa has been reviewed in the international media too such as on Al-Jazeera and by the Financial Times. CNN has called easypaisa ‘the model of the future’. Other easypaisa products and solutions in the pipeline include corporate payment solutions and insurance, among others.

DTAC Thailand Provides Rs. 68 Million to Telenor for Flood Effectees

Telenor Group’s operating company DTAC Thailand handed over a cheque of Rs68 million to Telenor Pakistan here today as its contribution toward the ongoing flood relief efforts.

To announce the donation a press conference was organized by Telenor Pakistan at a local hotel. Present on the occasion from Telenor Pakistan were Aamir Ibrahim, Vice President Corporate Affairs & Chief Strategy Officer; and Affan Haider, Head of Corporate Communications & Responsibility. DTAC was represented by Thana Thienachariya, Chief, Corporate Affairs & Strategy; and Wansit Saiyawan, Department Head, Corporate Affairs, PR & Communication.

Addressing the press conference Thana Thienachariya said: “DTAC and its employees have a long tradition of reaching out to communities in their time of need. As soon as we learnt about the devastating floods in Pakistan and the widespread destruction they have caused, DTAC Management decided to commit funds toward Pakistan’s flood relief efforts. We also made a passionate appeal to our employees to donate generously. By contributing the equivalent of Rs68 million to the relief efforts we hope we are able to help in some small way toward lessening the loss and grief that the people of Pakistan are facing due to these destructive floods.”

Aamir Ibrahim thanked employees of DTAC and members of its Management for personally coming to Pakistan to hand over their donation. “Your contribution will help make a huge difference to the lives of thousands of flood affected people by helping rebuild their livelihoods and overcome their immediate difficulties,” he said. “Such generous donations help Telenor Pakistan reinforce its commitment to help the flood affected, especially through long-term sustainable rehabilitation projects that are in line with the local needs.”

Last month, following the large-scale devastation caused by the floods, Telenor Pakistan pledged Rs100 million toward the flood relief efforts and entered into a partnership with Pakistan Red Crescent Society.

One-third of the pledged amount has already been spent on purchasing relief goods and medicines. These will support 6,000 families across Pakistan and comprise 15-days rations and medicine supplies.

Telenor Pakistan employees are also donating funds of their own. Until now, they have collected close to Rs10 million. The company has promised to match all employee contributions four times over. Other fund-raising methods being employed include donations through SMS, easypaisa and donation boxes placed at Telenor Sales & Service Centers. Special telethons on various TV channels and Radio stations are being held to raise additional funds and increase awareness of the issues being faced by the flood affected. Telenor Pakistan employees across the country are assisting further with the relief activities through volunteer efforts, carrying out assessments and distributing food, non-food items and helping with medical supplies.

All additional funding received will be used to facilitate rehabilitation of communities affected by the floods. A plan to rebuild some of the affected schools is already being chalked out with the help of partners.

Easypaisa Gone International, Launches ‘International Home Transfer’ Service

Tameer Microfinance Bank and Telenor Pakistan made another addition to the bouquet of easypaisa services with the launch of ‘International Home Transfer’ in collaboration with Xpress Money, UK. This service adds on to the existing domestic remittance service Money Transfer by providing international home remittances receiving facility in Pakistan. The latest easypaisa service can be availed by anyone with a valid CNIC irrespective of any mobile operator or bank affiliation through all Sales and Service Centres and Franchises of Telenor Pakistan and all branches of Tameer Microfinance Bank.

Vice President Financial Services Telenor Pakistan, Roar Bjaerum, announced the launch of ‘International Home Transfer’ service and shared, “Lack of financial infrastructure in many areas of Pakistan makes the process of receiving international remittances sent by loved ones abroad cumbersome. easypaisa International Home Transfer is meant to facilitate bridging this gap. The senders of funds from abroad can transfer the money through the wide network of Xpress agents present in more than 80 countries including United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom. A transaction ID will be generated on sending the amount which, along with the CNIC, are required to claim the funds through all Telenor Pakistan Sale & Service Centers, Franchises and Tameer Microfinance Bank outlets. International remittances can play a valuable role in providing foreign exchange, but more importantly, also offer significant potential to support incomes of poor and vulnerable groups. Tameer Bank has been given a member status of Pakistan Remittances Initiative (PRI). PRI is a joint initiative of State Bank of Pakistan, Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Ministry of Finance aimed at increasing the inflow of remittances through legal channels. Keeping in mind the importance of international remittances to Pakistan’s economy, the International Home Transfer service is being offered without any charges.

Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank’s easypaisa International Home Transfer Service will extend its relationships to more transfer agents in addition to Xpress Money in the future.

Telenor Pakistan Management Helps Flood Victims

Telenor Pakistan Management volunteered recently to assist in the ongoing relief efforts in Charsadda, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. They took active part in the registration of coupons, offloading relief goods from trucks and distributing them among the affected families. Relief items were distributed among 402 families during the day.

Here they can be seen being briefed by a Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) team member before the distribution. Telenor Pakistan’s flood relief drive includes volunteer initiatives and provision of relief items to the affected families. It has pledged PKR100 million for the flood relief activities and has signed a MoU with PRCS for the relief and rehabilitation of those affected.

Telenor Providing Financial Assistance to Pak Wheelers

Telenor Pakistan, as one of the project sponsors, has provided financial assistance to Pak Wheelers, a group of 11 engineering students of EME College, NUST, Islamabad to build Prodigy, Pakistan’s first hybrid car. The vehicle will represent Pakistan in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2010 to be held in Malaysia in July. Telenor Pakistan will provide Team Leader Syed Hassaan Ali with international communication facilities during the competition to enable him to share live updates.

The single-seater Prodigy has a gasoline-run combustion engine that works in conjunction with electric motors that makes it run more efficiently. It harvests energy lost during breaking and reuses it for moving. Energy is stored in super capacitor banks through a micro controller based Energy Management Unit. Prodigy has a fiber glass body and can go up to 250 km in just one liter of fuel.

We have always encouraged innovative ideas, especially those that are environmentally responsible. With projects ranging from low energy lighting solutions for our offices to establishing cellular sites that run on solar energy, Telenor continue to promote a greener, healthier and eco-friendly Pakistan.”

When Pak Wheelers began their senior year project, they had a commitment to an environment friendly cause but little financial resources. Their goal was to hoist Pakistan’s flag in the Shell Eco- Marathon Asia 2010. Helping them in their aim are sponsors from the corporate sector that have provided financial support for Prodigy.
