VoIP Based Services Like iMessage, Skype Cause Reduction in Mobile Carriers Revenues

Apple instant messaging app, iMessage and VoIP services have become so popular and it was expected that it will affect the carriers and reduce their revenue but what we did not expect is that it will happen so soon. According to a recent report, the carriers have already started feeling the impact.

According to a study by infrastructure solutions provider Mavenir System on behalf of MobileSQUARED, the carriers are already feeling the pinch.

To get a better idea of what exactly is going on, Mavenir talked to 31 different mobile carriers around the world and the general consensus is simple that application such as Skype, WhatsApp, and iMessage are affecting the revenues generated from the voice calls and also have decreased the returns from the SMS services these companies are offering.

The trend arguably began with Research In Motion, BlackBerry integrated Messager system. Replacing SMS with a BlackBerry to BlackBerry messaging protocol, BBM replaced those who were entrenched in the BB ecosystem. Users could, in theory, never spend a cent on SMS.

Now, Apple has also joined the fray with its messaging application iMessage for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch which is almost the clone of Blackberry app, BBM.

Third-party solutions such as WhatsApp have also made an impact, with the added benefit availability on just about every platform out there. which makes WhatsApp just as ubiquitous as SMS, but without the costs.

“The mobile landscape is changing as users embrace messaging of all kinds that enable them to seamlessly message a multitude of devices,” mobile(SQUARED) analyst Gavin Patterson added. ”This study confirms that lucrative messaging revenues are already impacted and operators are assessing ways to deliver core-network services in the all-IP environment.”

Voice calls are also covered by this type of solutions such as Skype. With applications in almost all major mobile operating systems, Skype has the potential to kill the traditional voice calls.

This could be the turning point in the mobile communication world and companies really need to re-think their strategies to better supervise their business in the are in the market for a long run.

Mozilla Prepping Mobile Operating System For the Web

Telenor Pakistan Announces Solid Financial Results for Q4 2010

ISLAMABAD, February 8, 2011: Telenor Pakistan has announced results for the fourth quarter of 2010. Pakistan’s second largest cellular company continued to out-perform the industry by registering above average growth. At the end of Q4 2010, the number of subscribers reached 24.7 million, showing a year-on-year growth of 10%. EBITDA margin has remained strong in the quarter, growing by 9% as compared to the same period last year. The year closed with Telenor Pakistan retaining its subscriber market share of 24.5%.

Jon Eddy Abdullah, CEO Telenor Pakistan while commenting on the results said:

“I am pleased to share Telenor Pakistan’s latest financial results. These show sustained growth both in the last quarter of 2010 and throughout the year. Mobilink, NADRA Join Hands for Utility Bills Payment Solution

The facility will empower Mobilink retailers to accept and deposit utility bills from all Mobilink and Non Mobilink customers, even people who do not own a mobile phone can avail this service by walking into a Mobilink retailer’s outlet and depositing their utility bills round the clock, within the due dates.

At the signing, Tariq Malik, Deputy Chairman NADRA said, “We are pleased to partner with the Mobilink which is the country’s largest cellular family with the most widespread retail and distribution network. Through this service, we are taking the bill payment facility to places where banks haven’t.” He further emphasized that “e-Sahulat platform is a tip of the iceberg and NTL is in process of transforming this platform into National Smart Service Platform for e-commerce. Through this Smart Service Platform organizations can utilize e-Sahulat touch points for cash in and cash out transactions under branchless regulations issued by State Bank of Pakistan. This arrangement will help commercial banks and Telecom operators to extend branchless banking concept through e-Sahulat without raising any infrastructure thereby saving capital and operational cost.”

Mobilink Leads the Smartphones Race, Other Telcos Better Catch Up!

With the recent turn in technology and the rise of ubiquitous computing the world over, it comes as a little surprise that not much has been happening to promote this ‘new technology’ era in Pakistan. Although, there has been a gradual transferal in trend of cell phones users shifting from ordinary mobile phones usage such as making and receiving calls and messaging towards more value added services offered by the new generation of smart phones including emailing, documents viewing, gaming, photos and video capturing and even editing and what not.

The irony however, lies in the fact that there is very little support for these technology savvy smart phone features in the market and mobile service providers are doing little in their own capacity to promote the trend and accommodate for the shift in the nature of use of mobile phone technology. With tablet computers being the new ‘IN’ thing the world over nowadays, in Pakistan, we’ve hardly seen telecom companies actively involved in promoting the smartphones revolution in our country.

Perhaps, Mobilink is the only one to date who has done a commendable job in taking initiative of starting the smartphones revolution in Pakistan back in 2005 when they first launched BlackBerry. At that time, only the elite, the corporate and the professional could think of using the BlackBerry because of its usage and benefits of ultimate connectivity. However, as the years have passed, the trend of using smartphones started shifting as mobile phone manufacturing companies like Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, HTC etc. started making smartphones for both low as well as high-end consumers.

At present, customers have a lot to choose from when it comes to purchasing a smartphone. We have BlackBerry, IPhone, Android phones, Windows Mobile phones, and two-in one tablet computer phones too. However, once again, unlike in West, when a technology comes it is very well supported by the complimenting service provider, in our country this practice is not so common yet. Right now,

only Mobilink has taken the step of introducing a variety of smartphones in collaboration with mobile companies like Samsung, Motorola and HTC and have launched Galaxy Tablet, Milestone and HD7 respectively in local market but others are still stuck at BlackBerry.

The question that now rises seeing the diverse lineup provided by Mobilink is, where are all other mobile service providers and why have they kept a distance from the needs of their customers so much that we actually feel deprived from what has become very ordinary the world over?

As of now, Ufone, Zong, Warid and even Telenor have only introduced various BlackBerry handsets but do we as tech savvy Pakistani consumers only need telecom support for BlackBerry only? Every single user of a smartphone has a different set of needs and is comfortable with using a specific kind of smartphone for example, I am a hardcore Android phone person and I will never go for a BlackBerry. In that case then, I will choose Mobilink to go with because they have got what I want and others don’t. It is time for the rest to follow the lead and move on!

Mr M9 ZONG! Where Are You?

Its been a while ZONG broad-casted the teaser for their upcoming brand M9 Zong. There were talks that they will launch the brand at the start of the year but still we don’t have any idea what’s their plan. Also we were expecting that some new codes will be introduced but No, the codes are the same as before. The good thing is that your “Lucky Numbers” are available. Lucky numbers are always available.

Having said that, there is an unusual delay from ZONG about this latest upcoming brand. People are getting bored of this delay. ZONG is trying to keep the interest of fans by providing them Scratch cards on their facebook fanpage like salad before the meal and we hope that the meal is good.

It is expected that the brand will be launched on 11th or 12th of this month. So, Mr M9, come soon, people are waiting for you.

Mobilink Exclusively Launched Samsung Galaxy Tab at Lahore Bloggers Meet-up!

In the year 2010, Mobilink initiated a new tradition of involving online community of bloggers in mobile technology related launches in Pakistan. The main aim was to engage, seek opinion and build relationship with the people who are always abreast with the latest technological trends in the telecom and mobile phone technology.

On New Year’s eve, Mobilink in collaboration with Samsung and Google launched the P1000 Galaxy tablet in the blogging community of Lahore. The meet-up took place in Bistro 201 and about 120 bloggers from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad showed up at the event including Jehan Ara, President PASHA Pakistan, Jibran, the current top Google mapper from Pakistan and teams of Propakistani and ApnaTime.

The event began at around 4pm and continued till 6pm. Many prizes were also given away including one Galaxy tablet to winner of an online competition, Hammed Dar from Islamabad. Two mobile phones and many Mobilink, Samsung and Google goody bags were distributed among bloggers by asking pop questions.

Overall, the bloggers meet-up brought a good end to 2010. Last year, Mobilink arranged 3 blogger meet-ups, one in Lahore for the Launch of Motorola Milestone – the android phone in the local market. The second one was arranged in Islamabad to mark the launch of HTC HD7 Windows Mobile Phone 7 powered smartphone. The last blogger meet-up was held on December 31st to celebrate the launch of Samsung Galaxy Tab.

In the year 2011, Mobilink hopes to welcome the new decade with a resolution to introduce more innovative products and services for our customers, engage, interact and support Pakistan’s blogging community and most of all develop a strong bond with the online community.
