5 Killed in PTCL Sponsored Car Racing in Rawalpindi

As you know that PTCL organized Car Racing in Rawalpindi to promote its Evo Nitro. The event took place today on 5th December but a it turned tragic when a car rammed into the crowd killing 5 people including the driver.

The driver of one of the cars lost control and broke the security barrier and hit the spectators who were gathered to watch the event. The driver and 4 other killed on the spot and injured were taken to the hospital.

According to Rawalpindi District Coordination Officer Imdad Bosal “The organizers did not take the requisite permission for holding the event.”

PTCL Organizes Speed Quest for Evo Nitro Boost

In a clever marketing move, Pakistan’s largest telecommunication company, PTCL is sponsoring a drag race which will be held on December 5 in Bahria Town Phase 8 for racing enthusiasts all over th ecountry. PTCL is sponsoring the event to promote its similarly named Evo Nitro 3G and draw on drag racers using ‘nitro boosts’ to make their cars go faster.

PTCL is collaborating with High Performance Racing (HPR) for the event. In the Evo Nitro speed quest drag race, legal car racing event participants will have a chance to race head-to-head in a secure and professional environment with the facilities of an ambulance and a fire brigade available in case of emergencies. The event has been segregated into different categories depending upon car specifications. The purpose of the segregation is to give every participant a fair change and give the winner a sense of accomplishment.

Exposed! PTCL Revised Student Broadband Package

A while ago PTCL Broadband limited the Student Package to 1MBPS. Now PTCL has ‘revised’ the student package and added 150 ‘free voice minutes’ to the package ‘silently’ increasing the price of package from Rs. 840 to Rs. 850. And also added Rs. 150 to the package for so-called free voice minutes. The total now is Rs. 999/- for 1 MBPS package with 150 not-so-free voice minutes.

Decide Yourself

PTCL claims to provide free E-Learning cards to all who sign up before 31 December 2010 but there is NOTHING FREE.
You never get response from easylearning@ptcl.net.pk regarding e-learning. If you contact Sebera, they send you back to easylearning@ptcl.net.pk.
You HAVE TO PAY RS. 150/- even if you don’t use the voice minutes.
Package Price is cleverly increased by Rs. 10. (from PKR 840 – PKR 850) as they did before introducing 1 minute package and gave it name of New Package.

Conclusion

The new PTCL Student Package sucks big time. Gives no incentive but robbing the students. PTCL usually don’t take customers’ consent before enabling these student packages. The package is nothing but a big damn blunder from beginner to end.

PTCL Broadband 10MB Package at PKR 9,999/Month

Today, PTCL Broadband has announced a new package of 10 MBPS for Rs. 9,999/- per month with unlimited bandwidth. Currently, PTCL Broadband is offering five packages which are;

1Mbps at Rs. 1,199/-
4Mbps at Rs. 1,999/-
6Mbps at Rs. 4,999/-
8Mbps at Rs. 6,999/-
10Mbps at Rs. 9,999/-

Though WordCall is providing the same package for Rs. 8000/ month but it covers a very specific area whereas PTCL has wide area coverage all over the country. Customers can also get PTCL WiFi Router for additional Rs. 200/month.

Also, most of the country’s telephone lines are on Copper, so, customer on Copper lines may not avail this facility. Copper lines can only support data rate of 2-4 MBPS. In big cities, PTCL is switching from old copper lines to FiberOptics which may support the high speed 10 MBPS data rate .

Having said that, PTCL customer support and after sales service is not up to the mark. Which really needs improvement.

PTCL: Privatization Deal Unfair, Contrary to Rules

Senator Waqar Ahmed Khan, the Federal Minister for Privatization revealed in the National Assembly that the deal of privatization between Etisalat and PTCL was made in the violation of procedures and rules and was not transparent.

The deal was made in contrary to the procedures and rules and it was not transparent said the minister while replying to a question. Later the subject was referred to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Privatization for investigation by the House.

The opposition party asked the chair to form a special parliamentary committee to investigate the matter but Faisal Karim Kundi the Deputy Speaker said that the matter is already under discussion with the standing committee concerned.

He added that “if members of the committee feel that formation of special committee is vital it would be done.”

He informed the House that transaction was made without taking the Privatization Commission Board into confidence and that the SPA was finalized, he also added that Etisalat has suspended $800 million over the alteration of land issue to be transferred to the UAE-based company.

He said, that around 3,500 properties were to be reassigned to Etisalat which also include lands not even owned by federal or any provincial government, those are private properties are under lawsuit.

The government has received an amount of US$ 1.79 billion from the Etisalat out of that an amount of US$ 1.5 billion has been forwarded to federal government for poverty alleviation and debt retirement.

The government is trying to resolve the issue of pending amount good-naturedly through diplomatic channels said Waqar Ahmed. He also added, so far there is no development in this regard.

Senator Waqar told the House that the deal was full of flaws and the legal advisors had asked the then government to scrap it otherwise it would be considered contrary to rules.

Later, minister for privatization also demanded the chair to re-evaluate the decision and form the committee in what the deputy speaker said it would be formed if the committee members express their wish in this regard.

PTCL introduces New Evo Packages

PTCL has been constantly updating their EVO wireless packages and in a recent move they’ve come up with volume based wireless broadband packages.

Starting from Rs. 799 per month they may seem pretty attractive but in fact they are quite disappointing. PTCL is offering 1 GB volume for Rs. 799 which is quite low and the worst part is you get charged Rs. 2 per MB if 1 GB limit is exceeded. So, if you use 500 MB extra volume you will end up paying Rs. 1000.

Even though these packages may seem a bit expensive but for light internet users they are quite beneficial.

Is PTCL Really Going to Double Up Broadband Speed Again? I think NO!

There have been a some rumors regarding the PTCL broadband speed would double up again in near future. Some of my friends are working with PTCL and they told me that they have no news about it. “If there is something like this going on, I am not aware of it”, one of my friends told. “PTCL doesn’t have enough capacity to again do it”, Another friend added. Some people are likely to believe this rumor because they see some work under process from PTCL nearby their houses i.e. deployment of copper wires. Believe me friends, My number is on Fiber Optics and that’s nothing to happy about.

You must be thinking why? If your number is on Fiber Optics, you cannot get any DSL service other than PTCL. PTCL has not allowed other companies to issue connections on Fiber Optics. That’s kind of monopoly but we have to live with it. To me there is not truth in this rumor. If you see PTCL guys deploying copper wires near your house, that maybe because they are issuing new telephone connections in that area. So, don’t dream and get back to work

Finally, They Deployed PTCL WiFi Router

I was having tough time convincing PTCL guys that I really need that WiFi router (Do I really?). Well… I just wanted to give it a try. Anyways after passing 25 days, they finally installed the WiFi router at my place. The representative of PTCL was quite friendly and suggested me that in case of any issue I can call him instead of calling and wasting time on PTCL Help Lines 1218 or 1236.

Upon asking, that how long would I have to pay the rental as the WiFi router doesn’t cost more than Rs. 4,500/- and will I have to return it back when I quit using PTCL broadband service even after 10 years? The answer was simple as expected, YES. So, people who are ordering PTCL WiFi router should keep in mind that they will never own the router. They have another option of buying a router from somewhere on lump sum price. The prices of good WiFi routers start from PKR 4,000 onward.

Having said that, if you have got PTCL WiFi router and later you decide to switch back to the old modem, you can do that easily. Just convert your package from Broadband WiFi Package to simple package and they will pick the WiFi router and give you back the old one.

PTCL WiFi Router Charges Appear on Bill But They Haven’t Delivered It Yet

PTCL is advertising newly introduced WiFi routers. I also requested for PTCL WiFi router the very next day it was launched. But I am yet to receive it even after 20 days. You can read details here: PTCL WiFi Router Not Deployed Yet!

Today, I receive PTCL Bill with WiFi router charges on it. Before calling PTCL Help Line, I contacted my relevant exchange and asked them regarding the matter. The guy told me that WiFi routers are now in stock and you can pick it from PTCL office. Why me? They were supposed to deliver it at doorstep. I asked them about the Bill and he said, that you didn’t contact. That’s not true. I contacted at least three times. Even if I didn’t, they were supposed to contact me.

I then called Help line and told her the whole story. She said that she is forwarding my complaint manually to concerned department and suggested me to visit their Islamabad Head Office to adjust the bill (why the heck should I go? What’s my fault?). According to her, WiFi router will be delivered within next 48 hours. Lets see…..

Update: PTCL WiFi Router Is Not Yet Deployed

PTCL Broadband recently started providing WiFi Routers for an additional rental of Rs. 200 per month. I also requested for the router as mentioned in my earlier post how PTCL Wifi Router. I applied for it on Jan 29, 2010 but they are yet to deploy the router. I contacted PTCL help center couple of times and they told me that my request was being forwarded and someone from the relevant exchange will contact me soon. More than 10 days have passed and I am still waiting for that ‘soon’ she kept telling.

I tried to call the relevant exchange to know the status of my application but their numbers were busy. Looks like they have a lot of orders… I will again try to contact them tomorrow and let you guys updated. The standard day of providing and installing WiFi router is 8 days. Come on PTCL, give me the WiFi router!

Update: I finally got a chance to talk to the relevant exchange and they told that they haven’t been provided the WiFi routers yet and asked me to call after 3 days.

Show Cause Notice Issued to PTCL on Poor Quality of Services

Pakistan Telecom Company Limited (PTCL) was issued a show-cause notice by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on poor services. This step was taken by PTA after a recent Quality of Services survey.

A 30 days dead line has also been issued to file a reply, which would decide what necessary actions PTA could be taking against PTCL. PTA, under the Telecom Act reserves the right to take legal actions.

Under Telecom Act, Objective of “Quality of Service” survey is to make sure that Telecom Companies are providing good quality services to consumers.

PTA, from time to time, has been repeatedly informing PTCL about its poor QoS and PTCL was directed to improve the quality as per license conditions, however, no improvement made therein despite ample time provided to PTCL. As a result, show cause notice has been served to initiate the proceedings against the licensee as per rules.

According to the details, survey was conducted across Pakistan including major and small cities and rural areas from August to October 2009 along with the PTCL representatives on a mutually agreed survey methodology. It may be mentioned that this is the first instance of PTCL being show caused on account of poor quality of service which clearly shows the PTA’s resolve for not compromising on sub-standard services to the telecom consumers.

Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that ensuring quality services to consumers has always been priority to PTA. This is evident from the continuous surveys conducted by PTA for both mobile and fixed line sectors. The recent establishment of Consumer Protection Directorate, providing fast and easy complaint registration mechanism is another major step in protecting and safeguarding consumer interests.

PTCL Broadband Needs to Train Front Desk Officers

Today, suddenly my Internet stopped working on my network. First I tried my luck and ‘struggled’ to fix the issue but nothing seemed to work. I finally decided to call PTCL help center and after painful wait of 30 minutes they picked up the phone and told me some basic things to do. I did as he told me and said if it doesn’t work, I can call again (who wants to waste hours on waiting….:s). Anyways… I didn’t work. I called couple more times but they were not able to help me out. Before I proceed further, let me tell you what exactly the problem was.

I am on a network with 5 PCs connected. I am using PTCL ZTE Modem and a D-Link Ethernet Switch to connect to the network. The problems was; when I was connecting Modem directly to my PC, Internet was working fine but when I was plugging in the cable from Modem to Switch, Internet failed to respond onto the network. I told the PTCL Broadband Rep that my networking is fine. The only problem is, Internet is not working. What he suggested me to take help of some Network Administrator and it seems that the problem is with my networking (dhaaa!!! told him so many times that my networking is fine).

I contacted some of my networking related friends and they told me that the problem is with the configuration of Modem. There is nothing wrong with the Switch or networking. I called PTCL help line another time and the personal forwarded my call to his supervisor (I hate when they transfer calls to supervisors because they keep you waiting for hours). I was lucky enough that he picked the call just after 11 minutes (hats off!). He guided me and fixed the issue and told me that my configuration was on Bridging mode which allows connection only to one PC. That was it and support desk wasted my 4 hours telling me that my networking has been collapsed .

I do understand that they are not very technical people and supervisors are supposed to help with configuration but at least front desk people should know what exactly the problem is and if they don’t know they should not misguide people.

PTCL Broadband Ends Up Student Packages Over 1 MB

PTCL offers 30% discount on broadband service to students of selected educational institutions. The offer was previously valid for all broadband packages but just after a day of introducing WiFi router, PTCL puts an end to all packages over 1MBPS. We confirmed this from PTCL help center. Most of the student package users must be angry with this move but lets just try to be realistic. 1MBPS is more than enough for any student activity. No? That’s just my opinion. I mean what do students do with 2MPBS or 4 MPBS connections?

I know some people who use (now used to use) student packages for commercial purposes. Some of them are even running cyber cafes’. I think it’s a good move from PTCL as there is no need of high speed connection for students and come on, you know, you don’t need high speed connection for any student activity… it’s not about PTCL, its an global formula. Now pay full price and give some money to PTCL .

PTCL WiFi Router for DSL Users – Use Broadband Anywhere Within 30 Meters Radius

PTCL now provides Wi-Fi routers to its DSL customers for an additional rental of Rs. 200/- month apart from their monthly regular charges. Wi-Fi router will enable fixed line broadband (DSL) users to surf wireless broadband service within 30 meters radius.

To use wireless broadband, your device whether it is a Laptop, Desktop, PSP, PDA, or cell phone must have Wi-Fi facility. You can secure your connection using password to avoid any misuse. The signals are Wi-Fi are strong enough i.e. up to 54 MBPS.

You can also request a Wi-Fi if you are existing PTCL broadband user. I have also applied for it. Customer representative told me that Wi-Fi router will be delivered within 7 working days. PTCL and DSL Broadband Agreement

On Friday, October 30, 2009, the DSL and PTCL operators have signed an agreement with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding provision of broadband services. Dr. Mohammed Yaseen (Chairman of PTA), Syed Nasrul Karim Ghaznavi (member, Finance), Dr Khawar Siddique Khokhar (member, Technical) and senior representatives of DSL and PTCL were present in the signing ceremony. The ceremony was held in PTA headquarters.

According to the agreement, now the DSL operators can acquire IP bandwidth along from any other operator including PTCL. This will enable the DSL operators to provide competitive tariffs for broadband services. Certain issues like laying fibers at PTCL co-locations, to lease bandwidth from other operators and several other issues are left on which PTCL and DSL operators have to reach some conclusion. Several meetings were conducted to solve these issues under the supervision of PTA. Due to this the DSL interconnect agreement was pending for several months.

It is announced by the PTA Chairman that broadband tariffs will be reduced significantly with the help of agreement and increase in competition. Due to this the dialup subscribers will be attracted to use broadband services and the penetration of broadband will increase in Pakistan. This will encourage dialup users to shift towards broadband services

Reduction in PTCL Profit

According to the analysis, it has been noticed that Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) faces a huge depreciation in its profit this year as compared to previous years. It has been found that the profit earned by the company in the quarter ended on September 30, 2008 was Rs 3.178 billion whereas the profit earned this year by the company in the corresponding quarter has been declined to Rs 2.568. This declination is quite big.

According to the declaration done by the board of directors of the company, the company’s share has gone Rs 0.50 in the review period whereas in the same period of the previous year, the cost was Rs 0.62 per share.

As given in the financial results, the company’s revenue was Rs 16.610 billion in the previous year as compared to this year’s revenue which is recorded as Rs 14.472 billion in this quarter. The services’ cost is declined to 9.380 billion against previous year’s cost of Rs 9.453 billion. It has been calculated that in the first quarter of FY10, the profit before tax reduction stood Rs 3.952 billion which was Rs 4.889 billion in the same quarter of FY09. It is also noticed that the company’s administrator and general expenses get reduced to Rs 1.679 billion which was Rs 2.219 in the same period of last year.

[Off the Record] PTCL Broadband to Launch 512 KBPS Connection

A friend of mine who is working with PTCL informed that PTCL is going to launch 512 KBPS Broadband connection again just for Rs. 300 per month very soon. This is a good news for people who don’t need high speed and don’t want to pay Rs. 1199/- for 1 MBPS connection. Although, this is a rumor but my PTCL friends are much sure about the release of this new package.

There had been rumors about PTCL again double up Broadband speed which doesn’t seem realistic though but if it happens, PTCL would be the first company in Pakistan to provide 8MBPS connection which is good news.

No doubt, PTCL Broadband is on the right track but they seriously need to improve their after sales service.
