Dell Inspiron 14R N4010 Review

Dell has released its new R series of Inspiron all-purpose laptops. Though the stylish silver accents are the first thing you’ll notice, the Inspiron R series is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. The Inspiron 14R may have fewer configuration options than the Inspiron 14 and may carry a higher starting price, but its improved hardware and refined design more than make up for the difference.

You can get an Inspiron R laptop in any one of four colors: Mars Black, Peacock Blue, Tomato Red, or Promise Pink. The real reason to select an R model is to obtain an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, which you can’t get in a regular Inspiron 14. Our test machine, came with an Intel Core i3-350M processor (2.26GHz, two cores, and four threads), delivers two processing threads per physical core for a total of four threads for massive computational throughput. This 4-way multi-task processing allows each core of your processor to work on two tasks at the same time. The Intel® Smart Cache within the processor is shared cache dynamically allocated to each processor core, based on workload. This efficient, dual-core-optimized implementation increases the probability that each core can access data from the fast cache, significantly reducing latency to frequently used data and improving performance. It also has 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 with 1GB of graphics RAM. It also carried a 500GB, 5400-rpm hard drive. Once you pick a system you can only change its color and upgrade to 6GB of RAM.

Beyond the internal hardware, the Inspiron 14R differs from non-R laptops in other important ways. The lid hinge is offset about half an inch forward from the back of the machine, and the internal keyboard-tray surface is a nice brushed-silver tone. The power plug extends from the back-right corner of the machine, next to a USB port (non-R units have the power plug on the left side, and nothing on the back). The left side of the Inspiron 14R includes the Ethernet jack, the exhaust vents, an HDMI output, a combination eSATA/USB port, and a multiformat card reader. The right side has another USB port, headphone and microphone jacks, and the 8X CD/DVD burner. In addition, 802.1 In networking is standard (an upgrade over the non-R models), and the SRS Premium Sound definitely produces better audio quality through the speakers than you get on the non-R Inspiron models. In all, the Inspiron 14R is quite an attractive package for a 14-inch, 5.1-pound laptop.

The Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics board makes playing games on this all-purpose portable a real possibility. More intensive games will require more sacrifices, but the 14R’s vibrant screen and reasonable graphics performance make it a pretty capable entertainment laptop, given its size and price.

When it comes to getting work done, the Inspiron 14R is no slouch. Intel Core i3 an i5 processors offer more than enough performance for everyday Web surfing e-mail, word processing, and light image editing.

With intelligent performance that accelerates in response to demanding tasks, such as playing games and editing photos, the processors moves faster when you do.

The Intel Core i5 processor automatically allocates processing power where it’s needed most. Whether you’re creating HD video, composing digital music, editing photos, or playing the coolest PC games—with the Intel Core i5 processor you can multitask with ease and be more productive than ever. It also boasts Intel® HD Graphics which provides superb visual performance for sharper images, richer color, and life-like video and audio. With 4GB of RAM, the system is pretty responsive.

The keyboard has great key action and is easy to type on, save forone annoyance: The spacebar sits too low and flush against the inside surface of the laptop, making it a little harder to press with your thumb than it should be. The large touchpad tracks smoothly and evenly, and the two distinct buttons make it easy to click what you want to, when you want to, with no accidental misclicks.

Dell Inspiron 15R N5010 Review

The Inspiron 15RN5010 runs an Intel Core i5-430M CPU with two cores, Hyper-Threading, and a clock speed of 2.26GHz. This 4-way multi-task processing allows each core of your processor to work on two tasks at the same time. The most impressive specifications are the notebook’s 6GB of DDR3 SDRAM and a 640GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue hard drive. This is more RAM and hard drive space than we’re used to seeing in a mid-range notebook, and it gives the Inspiron 15R N5010 excellent multitasking abilities as well as lots of head-room for image manipulation and other memory-intensive tasks. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition, so all the memory is available.

The Inspiron 15R N5010 has two memory slots.

Performance tests showed the Inspiron 15R N5010′s speed to be adequate for office and multimedia pursuits. Its 2.27GHz frequency is the lowest of all the available Intel Core i5 CPUs (except for the low-voltage models), but the difference between 2.26GHz, 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz will be negligible in real-world tasks. In our Blender 3D test, the Inspiron 15R N5010 recorded a time of 60sec. Integrated memory controller enables two channels of high-speed DDR3 1333 MHz memory. This memory controller’s lower latency and higher memory bandwidth delivers amazing performance for data-intensive applications.

You won’t really lose too much time when performing everyday encoding tasks, and even more taxing tasks such as DVD ripping will be accomplished in reasonably good time. It took us 1 hr 10 min to compress our test DVD to a 1.5GB Xvid file.

Graphics performance out of the installed ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 adapter is only middle of the road; it recorded a score of 4572 in 3DMark06. Nevertheless, it’s more than enough graphics performance for HD video processing and it will even be able to run some older games.

The hard drive recorded a fast transfer rate of 29 megabytes per second, thanks in part to its high density. Once it gets substantially filled with files, that figure will drop slightly.

Dell Inspiron 15R N5010: Design

The Inspiron 15R N5010 comes with a roomy keyboard that has firm yet easy to press buttons. It’s not tiring to type on it for long periods of time, but the keys do make a hollow thud when you hit them. A number pad is located on the right side of the keyboard, and although it’s a little squished, it comes in handy if you regularly use the calculator. The Function keys are reversed and this allows you to change brightness, volume and other tasks without having to first press the Fn button. If you’re used to hitting F5 to refresh your Web browser, you’ll have to remember to hold down Fn as well.

The touchpad is large, the keyboard feels good to type on and the design of the unit is nice and clean.

A large touchpad allows you to perform various gestures with two fingers: it supports two-finger scrolling, pinching and rotating. You can also set it up so that you can use one finger circular scrolling. The left- and right-click buttons are soft and don’t make a sound when you press them, we love that. There aren’t any extra buttons above the keyboard; you’ll only find the power button. The palm rest has a brushed design and it looks good. It’s very smooth though and could become sticky and uncomfortable to use during hot weather.

Sparseness in the design is also evident when you look at all four sides of the base. The ports and slots are well spaced all around the base, including on the spine, instead of being mainly crammed on side. The front has nothing but two speakers, which are reasonably loud and emit great sound for movies and music. There are also vents on the base of the system and overall we found the Inspiron 15R N5010 to run cool, without much heat coming through the base

Dell Inspiron 15R N5010: screen

The screen is 15.6 inches and it has a native resolution of 1366×768. It sits about two centimeters in from the spine, which gives the notebook good balance and a slightly different look to the norm. It has a red lid and a black bezel and these colors match nicely with the silver palm rest. There’s a webcam located above the screen, directly in the centre, and it’s accompanied by a built-in microphone. The bezel and the screen are very glossy though, and reflections can be distracting while you work. In dark environments, we noticed a shimmering in the screen when looking at white backgrounds while the screen was leaned back just past 90 degrees. The shimmering was not noticeable when the screen leaned forward.

Dell Inspiron 15R N5010: battery life

The Inspiron 15R N5010 has a 48 Watt-hour battery installed on its spine and it lasted 2hr 20min in our video rundown test. In this test, we disable power management, turn up the brightness and enable the wireless radio. This is a decent time for a Intel Core i5-based 15.6in notebook and you’ll be able to get even more life out of it if you use a power management plan and lower brightness.

Conclusion

Dell Inspiron 15R N5010 specifications make it a good option for anyone who wants a mobile desktop replacement system. It has plenty of RAM and hard drive space and it’s also very comfortable to use. The Intel® Core™ processors family adapts to your needs, no matter how you use your PC. With three levels of smart performance, it’s easy to find the Inspiron that’s right for you.

You might have read some interesting Internet firsts and facts in some older posts so, I thought why not write something about Computer. After all, it’s computer which laid foundation of many technologies we use daily. Obviously, computer was not in the current shape from the beginning. Let’s step back towards the history and learn some interesting facts about computer.

1. First ever microprocessor by Intel was “4004”.

Every computer has a problem once in a while. Sometimes our computers freeze, sometimes our computers won’t turn on. Sometimes the only solution is to reformat everything and start from zero. This can be really frustrating. Especially if you aren’t a computer technician and have to rely on one. Sometimes computers shut down and restart by themselves. So, why does your computer shut down? Why does your computer keep restarting? This is very annoying since jobs in progress may be lost and probably will have to be done again from the beginning.

But maybe there is something you can do, a sort of preventive maintenance that can be done in order to prevent such problems.

With new computer operating systems being put out every year, it is not uncommon to hear about computers shutting down by themselves or restarting by themselves. So why does your computer shut down? It may be due to a variety of factors, some of them could be that mal-ware or ad-ware has gotten to your computer. A computer virus is always a plausible theory. But, why does your computer keep restarting? Maybe checking the hard disk for any of the above reasons could be a good idea.

Keeping and maintaining your computer system is very important in order to have a stable and safe system. Periodic scans and checks should be automatically scheduled during low-usage hours in order to preserve your unit’s speed and stability.
