The marketing firm Nielsen recently released some results that reveal that since the launch of iPhone 4S back on October 2011, Apple has seen a massive growth in its iOS market share in the last quarter. However, Android did have a stronghold on the mobile market in that month with a striking 61.6% shares, but its shares dropped sharply to stand at 46.9% in the month December because of a rapid growth of iOS, the market share of which rose to 20%.

AppleInsider claims that the mobile platform of Cupertino-based Company peaked at 44.5% in market share that put both Android and iOS in a strong competition.

The Cupertino tech giant is trying hard through its popular iPhone handset to minimize the gap, but Android still manages to remain one of the most sought-after mobile platforms among the Americans. Yet, it seems that Apple is not of much concerned about its Waterloo-based rival.

Research in Motion known for introducing BlackBerry seems to be much affected as its progress continues to decline over the past few months or so. Its market share was decreased to stand as low as 4.5% in the month of December compared to its 7.7% share recorded three months earlier. The rest of the 5% are shared by the mobile platforms including Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile platforms, Nokia’s Symbian and HP’s webOS.

The year 2011 not only went good for Google’s mobile OS Android, but also for Google’s web browser Chrome as well. Both these products from Google enjoyed a good steady growth in year 2011. StatCounter stats reveal that Chrome jumped from 15% market share a year ago to 27% market share at the end of December, 2011. Google’s Chrome finished the year with two points above Firefox’s 25% which is lowered from 31% a year ago. Interestingly, Google has recently revised its deal with Firefox to keep its Google search engine default on the Firefox for next three years. The deal finalized for $1 billion.

However, the data collected from other sources interpret some different stories. For instance, the data collected by NetMarketShare reveals that Chrome is still slightly behind the Firefox. According to the data, Chrome finished year 2011 with 19% market share compared to 22% market share for Firefox. However, the research firm did say that the Chrome is continuously growing in numbers, while Firefox is experiencing a decline in its user-base. In addition to this, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is also losing popularity.

Surprisingly, Google has failed to keep the same trend for its mobile Android browser, which is miniaturized by the mobile Safari across iOS devices with 53% to 16% market share. On the desktop, Safari is way too behind to the IE, Firefox and Chrome. The Internet Explorer is currently having the market share from 39% (StatCounter) to 52% (NetMarketShare). Now it depends on you which research firm you consider more authenticate over other.

Google Chrome is one of the rapidly growing browsers after Microsoft’s Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. StatCounter reports recently that Google’s Chrome has become the second most popular browser after beating Firefox.

The reports have been published in Wall Street Journal stating that the worldwide market share of Chrome has reached 25.69% just over Firefox’s 25.23%. However, Internet Explorer continues to enjoy the top spot with 40.63% market shares.

However, in the United States, the Chrome is still at third spot with 17.3% of market shares, up 6.41% from the last year. Internet Explorer continues to enjoy the top position with 50.66% of market share, up by 0.42%. With 20.09%, Firefox holds the second place.

Although, the Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is on the top of all browsers, it is absence from the smartphone and tablet market is a big challenge for it to retain its position. The Internet Explorer’s market shares fell below 50% for the first time, reported netmarketshare.com last month. On the other hand, Apple’s Safari – a default browser on the iPhone and iPad accounted for 62.1% of mobile traffic. Similarly, Internet Explorer being top desktop browser accounted for 52.63% of desktop traffic, the researcher claimed.

There are reports that Google is working hard to bring Chrome to its Android platform in a little while as default browser. The Chrome was launched three years ago and since then its popularity is growing quickly. According to reports, the number of Chrome users reached a milestone of 200 million last month.

It is a good sign that browsers are having a healthy competition and the benefits of this is already reaching users in the form of new features and improved functionality of different browsers.

Samsung and Apple have long been in legal battle over several infringement cases regarding intellectual property. Both tech titans have accused each other in many countries. However, Apple has always remained a step ahead of Samsung. But the recent reports are perhaps a victory of nerves for Samsung as it has grabbed the title of world’s top smartphone maker from Apple in the July-September quarter, reported research firm Strategy Analytics. The research firm claimed that the entire smarphone industry has viewed an annual growth of 44% in smartphone shipments that appeared to be 117 million units.

The result reveals that the Korean-based company, Samsung shipped 27.8 million units in last quarter, making up for 23.8% of the market, whereas Apple shipped 17.1 million units that accounted for 14.6% of market share. Popular Android services, widespread global distribution and exquisite hardware designs were the key factors behind Samsung’s success in last quarter.

If we probe deep down, we will come to know that it’s not only Android handsets that contributed in Samsung’s victory, but there were also included a host of affordable smartphones featuring the Bada platform.

Apple held the top spot for being world’s top smartphone supplier when it supplied 20.34 million iPhones in second quarter of 2011, leaving behind the Nokia. Perhaps, the major reason for Apple’s defeat was the fact that rumors of new iPhone that held people from going for iPhone handset. Samsung is able to boost its sales through its successful Galaxy S II smartphone.

The results of next quarter would be interesting as we are all anxious to know whether Samsung will able to retain the top spot or not. Apple has announced recently that it has already sold 4 million units of its latest smartphone, iPhone 4S within first week after debut. Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, on the other hand, is scheduled for next month.

If we collectively look at the smartphone sales worldwide, Nokia still holds the top spot with 106.6 million units shipped in third quarter of 2011 over 110.4 million of last year. Samsung shipped 88 million for the same quarter up from last year’s 71.4 million. The Chinese handset maker ZTE with 18.5 million shipments moved up to fourth spot, while Apple that only sells iPhone handsets in this quarter is on fifth spot with 17.1 shipments.

Samsung has become a loss making unit in the recent times except for its smart phone SBU. They have been instrumental in the segment and have followed Apple head to head. Their recent smart phone release – Samsung Galaxy S II’s market share is slated to sink as Apple is gearing up for the mega release of iPhone 5. Samsung’s S II is certainly a bulky device and in terms of its design it looks to be in between a 7” tablet and a regular smart phone. Samsung’s foolish attempt will be taken for a toss as and when the new iPhone hits the market.

Holding a Samsung S II device is comparable to holding a big bulky brick in hand rather than a classy device. On the other hand, Apple has always introduced stylish and good looking smart phones that have changed the way people conduct business, communicate and share information. Samsung has rather done the smart work by just scaling up the resolution, processor and camera features in their S II smart phone to position it a touch better against an iPhone. However, the market dynamics are all set to change again and it will be advantage Apple in the smart phone segment.
