How to: Burn a Data DVD or CD Using Windows Media Player in Windows 7

Most of us know how to burn DVDs or CDs using third party burning tools like Nero Burning ROM, Gear DVD 7 etc. Burning an audio CD through these tools will only allows you to add approximately 80 minutes of music on it. But, on the other hand if we use Windows 7 Media Player to burn a data CD or even a DVD, we will be able to add several hours of music on a single Disc, furthermore we can add pictures and video files to the data CDs.

Main Advantage

One of the biggest advantage of using Windows Media Player in Windows 7 while burning a data DVD or data CD is that the selected files are not transformed into a different format before saving them to the black data disc; instead they remain in the compressed form. This mechanism allows you to add more and more items on a single CD. The quality of the files remains the same as there is no transformation in the file format.

Steps for burning a data DVD or data CD in Windows 7 using Media Player are as follows:

1. Click Start and go to All Programs.

2. Select Windows Media Player from the list.

3. When the player opens click the Burn tab in the Player Library.

4. Now click Burn options and select Data CD or DVD.

5. Insert a blank CD or DVD disc into DVD/CD burner of your computer.

6. If AutoPlay dialog box appears just close it.

7. Some people have more than one CD drive in their computer and If you have multiple CD drives just select the one you would like to use in the navigation window.

8. Now search for the songs that you want to burn.

9. Now make a burn list by dragging the songs from the details pane in the center of the Player Library to the list pane which is on its right side.

10. Here you can also change the order of the items in the burn list by dragging them upward or downward in the list.

11. If you want a song to remove simply right-click on the item and click on remove from list.

12. Now if you are satisfy with final list and are ready to make a CD just click the Start burn button.

13. Now sit back and relaxed as the burning process will take a while.

If your data exceeds the capacity of the CD or DVD then it will give you the option of burning the rest on a different disc.

Note: A DVD-Video disc e.g. the movie DVD you buy or rent from the store is not the same as a data DVD.
