Box.net Upgrades Cloud Storage Offerings

Box.net is a cloud based sharing service that has recently announced some vital storage upgrades for its business and personal plans.

Previous to this announcement, the Box.net was offering 1GB storage to its personal account users. This storage has now moved up to 5GB which one of the most munificent free offer from any of the cloud sharing service. For business accounts, the Box.net will now offer 500GB storage for the shared workplace. However, the enterprise customers will now enjoy the unlimited cloud storage service for files and documents.

The CEO and cofounder of Box.net Aaron Levie talked to us about the Box.net new storage tiers. He stated that Box.net started in 2005 and at that time the normal size of your large capacity hard drive was 400GB. Today, we can get a 2TB drive at the same price for what a 400GB drive cost in 2005.

According to him, the growth in storage capacities not only has an impact on customers, it also has an impact on the data centers as well. Offering more storage for the same price is now possible for data centers and that is the reason why Box.net has decided to upgrade its storage offerings.

The Box.net was started as a cloud storage platform pretty much similar to the Dropbox today. In last five years, Box.net has developed considerably. The aim of the Box.net is to become more about content management and collaboration platform than merely about storage. It is quite similar to Microsoft SharePoint both in its scope and feature set.

Box.net is aiming to give quality services as compared to its competitors in terms of content management and collaboration space.

Box.net also expresses this fact cheerfully that you can now connect Box.net to Google Docs, Google Apps and Salesforce.com.

Other Cloud Upgrades

The Box.net upgradation is not just limited to its storage offerings. It has also upgraded its cloud. It recently achieved its SAS 70 II certification that offers 256-bit encryption. Box.net now has dual data center with an uptime of 99.98%.

Box.net is also working on making its search faster. It is also working on its mobile offerings and some of its workflow tools.

Another aim of Box.net is to become a location agonistic cloud server so that no one feel any difficulty to access their documents and files from anywhere. By storing data in the cloud, you can access your files and documents from any device and location.

Pricing Plan

Box.net offers following prices for its storage:

  • Personal Accounts: It is a free account with a storage limit of 5GB. The maximum file size is 25MB. You can upgrade to more storage plans for $10 or $20 per month.
  • Business Accounts: This offers 500GB of total storage for $15 per month with a file size up to 2GB.
  • Enterprise Accounts: This plan is offered for $35 per month with unlimited storage space. It also offers a file size up to 2GB.
