Report: Apple World’s Fourth Biggest Mobile Vendor

The changes caused by the massive growth of the Smartphone market are now prominent in the entire mobile phone market. The obvious example of this change is the Apple’s recent progress as it surpassed the RIM to become the fourth largest mobile phone supplier. Sonny Ericsson dropped off from the top five rankings for the first time in years.

The reports from International Data Corporation (IDC) claim that Apple’s market share grew from 2.54% in 2009 to 4.1% in the third quarter of 2010. Its close competitor RIM grew from 2.9% to 3.6% during the same period. Nokia remained on the top of the list with a growth rate of 32.4%. Samsung and LG held the second and third position in the top five mobile vendors’ list with 21% and 8.3% share respectively.

According to IDC, in coming years the Smartphones will play even a more vital role. Kevin Restivo, a senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker says, “We are expecting that the Smartphone sub market will grow 55% over this year and the vendors who aren’t able to produce some strong collection of Smartphones will have to face great challenge to maintain and grow their market share in coming future.”

If we look at the portfolio of different mobile vendors, most of them have over ten phone models in their lists while Apple is far ahead of them with only one or two phones that it offered for sale, i.e. iPhone 3GS phone model or iPhone 4.

Probably, the reason behind Apple’s increased market share is the introduction of new iPhone 4 in 17 countries. According to reports from Apple, it sold 14.1 million iPhones in the third quarter of 2010 with a 91% year over year increase. Its not the end for Apple here, the CEO Steve Jobs said in his statement, “the company still has a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar.”
