AIM App for Apple’s iPad

Though AOL is not the only gatekeeper to internet, many of the U.S. clients still use this for chatting. The release of AIM app for Apple iPad is really a sensible approach.  AIM app for iPad has many social networking sites integrated such as Twitter, Facebook and Lifestream sites. This app allows its users to stay connected with their friends and contact of social media except for some basic functionalities of networking.

After downloading AIM app on to the Apple’s iPad, you will be asked to create an account. Later you have to select any site like Facebook, AIM, Mobile Me or .mac.  Once entering the user Id and password of AIM, detailed features of AIM like cross-platform chatting with users of Facebook and other features of social networking will be displayed on the screen. Initially you may be facing little problem in creating a dedicated account of Facebook or so, but later it will be done easily.

An icon is present at far-left portion on a bar, which is across the top portion of AIM app which displays the account that is signed in currently. The Friends list and social networking feeds of Lifestream can be viewed by tapping the icons that are present in the far-right portion of the App. The best thing is that all these features are not displayed constantly on-screen. The ‘+’ icon in the buddy list allows you to add a new friend on AOL and the “edit” feature allows you to delete the contact you wish to. Once the Facebook account is added, chatting with friends on Facebook can be continued. Landscape mode of the iPad provides you with a big keyboard on which you can work comfortably.

One fourth of the screen is occupied by vertically-aligned window the “Active IM” while the background image along with virtual keyboard at the bottom, takes up the remaining screen. This IM window presents quality information such as availability, total time present online, services and preferences. The user can choose their own mode of availability such as Available, Invisible and Away. Services option allows you to connect to various social network sites. There is also the search box by which you can find the name of your friend easily instead of going through all the contacts.

Resizing of the chat window is not possible in this AIM app, unlike the AIM 7.3 app, the big brother of AIM app. This is not a very big problem as appropriate vertical space is available on iPad. The icon “X” allows you to close the chat window. The user can withdraw from the window by pressing “Me” icon in the left-upper corner. Multitasking is not possible here as iPad doesn’t support it.  This can be amended after the release of iOS4 for iPad.
