Are the Applications of Facebook Compromising the Privacy of Users?

According to an investigative news report from The Wall Street Journal, says that though the users of Facebook set their profiles with strictest settings of privacy, when they use the high rated applications on the social networking site, the identity of users is being shared to third party admen and firms of internet tracking. Knowing this, even the users who opt for the strictest privacy settings of Facebook, will be terrified. The applications on Facebook allows it users to share common concerns, play games that are interactional community based and interact with each other more collaboratively.

About 59 million Facebook users are being staggered by its applications especially the Farmville. Among these the most ill-famed offender is Farmville and the other app is Texas Hold’em Poker. The sobriety of the trouble is severe, especially in the case of Farmville, where this breach is not only confined to the application users but also to the people in the users’ friend list. Not the Facebook only but third-party applications are to be blamed for these privacy transgressions, unlike the earlier debacle of privacy in Facebook.

As per the rules of Facebook, the developers of applications have no right to divulge the information of the user to any entities external to Facebook, even though the user acknowledges the condition and terms of them. An official from Facebook states that the technical system of Face book has always been balanced with firm policy enforcement and they will rely on these both and help people to control their information. But this statement is damn ironic because with all these systems, Facebook still couldn’t provide safety and privacy to its users and failed to impose the privacy policy on the developers of applications.

This official also claimed that the leakage of the user information was completely accidental and technical system related to browsers was blamed for this. This information of users is very profitable for the developers and hence one doesn’t will to give even benefit of doubt for these developers of Facebook applications. Using a referrer URL, the user information will be shared, where the URL, used all over the internet tells, from where the users logged in and this is technically a grey field.

This transfer of user info is technical, but this information transmission is apparent over the internet and not only the Facebook but many other websites also transfer the user information to third party developers. But the user transmission is more evident on Face book.

Though the entire responsibility cannot be laid on Facebook, it has a disruptive history regarding the security and privacy things. Hence the Facebook’s latest privacy development features have no value in this matter. If Facebook wants to secure the trust of the users, which is being declining steadily, so far, strict action has to be taken by Facebook regarding the privacy of user information. Hope people stay away from such malicious applications on Facebook.
