Dell Streak Unofficialy Gets an Android 2.2 Froyo Update

The Dell Streak, a tablet device with a 5-inch screen launched some time back now has an Android 2.2 Froyo to support the device, though from an unofficial source. This would surely be good news for consumers in the United States who purchased this device and have always wanted to upgrade from the version 1.6 of the Android operating system.

Until now, users of this “versatile 5-inch Android tablet”, as the manufacturers like to call it were unable to get newer versions of the software on their Dell Streak, even though overseas users benefited from the release of the Android 2.1. Dell had however promised consumers within the United States an upgrade to Android 2.2 some time later this year, though they have not specified any exact date.

Right now, it has become possible for owners of the Dell Streak, regardless of location to upgrade to Android 2.2 or latest version, though in an unofficial manner. This is made possible by a ROM upgrade made available by a member of the online forum; MoDaCo, and would require complete rooting of the device, in addition to being risky. According to this forum member, the ROM upgrade solution is still in its beta version but has not affected the functionalities of the Dell Streak in any way.

If you decide to take the Android 2.2 update risk with your Dell Streak, you might be faced with issues or random re-booting of your device or poor 3G connectivity moments after you switch off the wireless network. Though, an enjoyable feeling and a new look awaits you if you complete your upgrade successfully and all functions remain in operation. For better information on the hands-on installation of the unofficial Android 2.2 Froyo on your Dell Streak, head up to the MoDaCo forum and search for related topics.

You should note that installation of this unofficial Froyo would void any warranty claim on your Dell Streak and you will not benefit from any support being offered to same devices still running on the Android 1.6. So, it is important that you weigh the risk and the benefits before you decide to upgrade your Dell Streak in this manner.

However, if you have decided to wait for the official Android 2.2 update promised by Dell, do not feel bad that others have gotten it while you do not. Seek ways to better enjoy your Dell Streak, by unlocking possibilities which are rarely exploited using the device. Explore more compatible Android Apps, play more games. Furthermore, utilize the Google voice support and above all pray that Dell keeps to its promise of an Android 2.2 upgrade before the end of 2010.
