Playstation Phone may be Available in Spring 2011

A recent report in Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper today confirmed that Sony will launch a device, blending the features of a Playstation Portable and a smartphone in the Spring of 2011. This would appear as if the rumors of the Playstation Phone could soon become a reality.

According to the report in the newspaper, the device will be based on the PSPgo and will retain the PSPs familiar gaming controls. The PSPgo is a smaller version of the Playstation Portable, which went on sale in late 2009. The device is capable of linking to Sony’s Playstation Network services and relies on a Wi-Fi link for downloads of music, movies and software.

The new device is being developed by Sony Ericsson and is expected to go on sale first in Europe and the US.

For some time now Sony has been avoiding comments on the rumors of the Playstation phone that have been doing the rounds on the Internet. Sony, however, did say that if it intends to compete in the cell phone gaming market, it would be with a device that appealed more to core gamers. He said the device would consists of the Playstation’s DNS and match Sony’s vision of gaming, which is different to those of the Android and iPhone games.

If it is indeed the case that Sony is about to launch such phone in the near future in the US, we will surely see an announcement made in the upcoming International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sony normally makes use of this event to showcase products and services it plans to launch in the US.
