Sprint to Offer App Packs on Android Phones

Sprint Nextel just introduced their new plan: help Android users get their applications more conveniently by providing application packs. With each pack intended for particular types of users, they would contain a set of Android apps that are closely related so that these users won’t have to go through the Market and pick them out one by one anymore.

For instance, you won’t have to download a news feed application for your favorite artist and then get a merchandise store and yet another application for information on related artists. Sprint’s application packs will offer all these applications in a single pack. You don’t have to go out of your way in the Android market to pick each one out of a horde of other applications.

The service was introduced at the San Francisco CTIA wireless trade show. This, according to Kevin McGinnis, Sprint’s Director of Product Management, is the company’s way of saving consumers from the frustrations of having to swim through thousands of applications in the Market just to get what they need. McGinnis, in a telephone interview, said that the inconvenience could stem just from the idea of having to look for other relevant applications.

This is quite the timely idea, considering that the number of developers for Android is growing, which means that more and more applications will become options for consumers. While these applications are presumably great, consumers might not be able to make proper choices because of the overwhelming numbers.

Of course, other companies that make these applications will be involved. One of them is Disney, which means that consumers who buy an application pack on Hannah Montana will get a news feed, online store, and other relevant applications in one place.

Another company is Yahoo!, which will be offering e-mail, news, sports, finances and, of course, search, all in one pack.

There are more companies as well, including but not limited to Amazon, eBay, RadioShak, Comcast and Electronic Arts. This list is just for their initial partners, as Sprint will open to other developers in a matter of weeks.

These partners will determine what composes the packs, how much they cost and other details that are important for classifying them. Some applications will have premium content. According to Len Barlik, Vice-President of Sprint’s Wireless and Wireline development, it all depends on the partners.

As of now Sprint has 13 packs available. They’ll be applying the service to new phones, including the Samsung Transform, the LG Optimus S, and the Sanyo Zio, all of which will be out within the month of October.
