Razer Announces Handheld PC Gaming

Razer may be looking at joining the handheld console gaming industry, but with their PC games concept. The company yesterday announced its portable gaming concept prototype called “Switchblade” at the CES in Las Vegas.

The Razer Swichblade will be smaller, but much more powerful than a laptop, with its 7-inch capacitative multitouch screen and dynamic, programmable keyboard. The company did not go into detail about the device as it is still a concept prototype, but it was confirmed that the device will be powered by an unreleased Intel Atom processor and runs the Windows 7 operating system with a custom Razer User Interface.

The device will be capable of playing games and video at 30 frames per second. Other specs will include a 128GB SSD, Wi-Fi, 3G, a mini HDMI-output and a USB 3.0 port. The company, however, warned that these specs may change by the time the device goes to the market.

It is current form, the device is capable of providing between 4 to 6 hours of intensive gameplay.

The keyboard is in effect just an LCD screen overlaid with clear plastic tactile keys and was designed with gamers in mind. With the Switchblade, the company will be moving the most of the game’s UI to the keyboard, offering more screen for gamers to play in.

As example, certain function in WOW, for instance the skill bar, will be a pressable key on the keyboard instead of taking up screen space. The company is currently working with a number of game makers in making games compatible with Switchblade.

The Switchblade’s keyboard, as mentioned, is programmable. Users can also program the keyboard and simply hide the various UI windows on the screen.

Although the Switchblade was built for gamers, it will also offer Internet browsing and multimedia capabilities. The device will also consist of a built-in webcam.

The company said that it is way too early to discuss pricing of the device. They also stressed that the device is still a working concept and the final gadget may not even look like the device on display.

The real question on many gamers’ minds is whether PC gaming can in fact be converted to the handheld console market, especially a 7-inch display device!
