Wikipedia Rings in $16 Million in Donations this Holiday Season

Wikipedia will kick off the new year with a wealthy bank balance, after reporting donations in excess of $16 million over the past holiday season.

According to a post by founder, Jimmy Wales the fundraiser was the most successful in the history of the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, the parent of Wikipedia.

Wales also wrote that this year is more incredible than most others, due to the fact that this year is the tenth anniversary of Wikipedia.

Wales said the foundation and its ad-free sites had enjoyed more than 500,000 donations, nearly 130,000 donations to local Wikimedia chapters worldwide, two of the largest fundraising days in Wikipedia history. He added the average donation size was around $22.

The fundraising will fully fund the Wikimedia Foundation’s budget to support Wikipedia and all the sister projects entering 2011.
