AMD Announces Radeon HD 6790, Priced at $150

Recently, AMD has released a new graphics card intended to fill up the gap between its two previously released graphics cards, Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 6850. The release of this card is not unexpected. This new Radeon HD 6790 is offered at $149 and is a strong competitor of Nvidia’s just released GTX 550 Ti. This card is available with 800 Stream Processors, a 256-bit memory interface, 40 Texture Units, 1GB of GDDR5 set to 4200MHz and a core clock of 840MHz.

The idea of AMD Radeon HD 6790 is established upon the cut-down version of the Barts GPU that was first introduced in the Radeon HD 6800 series. The significant characteristics of this memory card include an enhanced tessellation performance, Eyefinity enhancements, and the ability to accelerate Blu-ray 3D video over HDMI. This HD 6790 also features a TDP of 150W and two 6-pin PCI Express power connectors, however, board partners are intended to come up with their own designs and some of them only need a single power connector, perhaps a positive thing with this price tag. There are cards from board partners come with custom cooler.

Reviews indicate that the performance of this card is by and large higher than GeForce GTX 550 Ti. However, the price margin is not much between the GTX 550 Ti and the Radeon HD 6850, the most effective AMD card. GTX is available at $130 or less while the Radeon HD 6850 is priced at $160. We have to wait till the price of Radeon HD 6790 declines only then we can tell how effective this card is.
