Microsoft Discloses ‘Mango’ – Next Windows Phone Version

The second day of Microsoft’s MIX11 conference is much busier than the first day as Microsoft not only announced Kinect for Windows SDK but also revealed the Windows Phone update (codenamed Mango). According to Joe Belfiore, the new Windows Phone update will not only available on new handsets, but also available for the current Windows Phone users. He further mentioned that the ‘Developer Tools’ will be announced somewhere the next coming month.

This new update Mango will show support for additional 16 languages will be released in autumn. Apart from additional 16 languages, the number of countries will also be increased from 30 to 36 where Windows Phone apps should be submitted. Microsoft has also raised the number of countries from 16 to over 25 where the apps will be offered for download or for sale.

Joe Belfiore also emphasized on the changes that will be specific to developers as “get more value out of your apps.” Further he claimed that the user-specific promotions will be disclosed later.

WinRumors known for providing Microsoft related news or rumors online stated that the forthcoming version of Windows Phone will provide developers with some new tools:

  • Live Agents create superior customer engagement with real-time interactions via Live Tiles, Push Notifications, Deep Linking and Background Agents. Multitasking is also enhanced to allow for fast applications switching, as well as background audio and file transfer.
  • Phone integration has been greatly improved for developers wanting to do more with their apps. The Live Tiles functionality has been expanded to give developers more flexibility and engage with their customers better.
  • Developers will have access to the Motion Sensor library and the camera, enabling augmented reality experiences. The integration extends deeper into the operating system via sockets and database access now available to apps and games.

Some of the new features that Microsoft going to introduced in Windows Phone include: the typographic keys to scan for documents, improved search and more information is provided about the apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace. The most appreciated feature is the attachment of apps as ‘Extras’ to searches. Belfiore gave the demonstration of this feature by searching the movie ‘Source Code’ on Bing and later watched the trailer of the movie on IDMB app positioned in ‘Extras’.
