No Way Unlocking the Radeon HD 6790

AMD launched its Radeon HD 6790 earlier this week. What we were told that the design of the card is based on a cut-down version of the Barts GPU that was first introduced in the Radeon HD 6800 series. In view of many, they thought that they can re-enable the hardware through BIOS flash to attain a free boost, but hard luck for them as nothing such will happen.

The people at X-bit labs talked to AMD’s Evan Groenke who described this as, “”It is not something that should be possible on the 6790. Those SIMDs are fused off.” So, it is obvious that what we have seen in previous versions where one can turn the Radeon HD 6950 with a slightest of tweaks into a Radeon 6970 will no more happen in case of 6790 as it seems that the card is locked at hardware level.

Overall speaking, the card is still a good piece of overclocker and it is still possible to extract some extra performance from the card unless board partners perform some cooling solutions. But opting for Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 (768MB) at the given price or spending on a rather much powerful Radeon HD 6850 still seems a better option comparison wise.
