Toshiba Unleashes Un-Encrypted, Auto-Erasing Hard Drives

Recently, Toshiba has launched a new range of its self-encrypting hard drives that offer remarkable security features to professional users. Toshiba’s idea behind designing these MKxx61GSYG 2.5-inch drives is to target the computers and related devices used by government, medical and financial institutions. The major feature of these drives is that they invalidate the data stored in them when connected or linked to an anonymous host. On every start up, an authentication process is initiated to identify the host. However, based on the failure of authentication, users have the option to predefine some actions.

One such feature allows the users to configure the hard drive in a way that it will deny the access any unauthorized connection is spotted. Another feature of this drive is its ability of data wipe. Data wipe can either be performed on whole drive or on specific blocks. There is another feature that allows the users to configure their drives in a way that it will delete particular data ranges every power cycle or in case it receives repeated invalid unlock commands. A press release suggests that the drive works on a principle of cryptographic wipe means deleting the certain keys essential to decrypt the data rather than scrapping the entire data itself.

Apparently, drive utilizes AES 256-bit encryption that according to US government is vital for protecting top secret data. Toshiba has not yet disclosed the complete specs for its MKxx61GSYG drives line; however, the models will be available in the capacities of 160GB to 640GB with a 16MB buffer and a 7200RPM spindle speed. These drives will go on production somewhere this spring that is all we are told by the company. We have to wait until company reveals the pricing plan for its drives.
