Facebook Introduces a Smarter News Feed and the Ticker

Certainly, this is Facebook’s Week as we have a lot of leaks and announcements just before the big event of f8 developer conference. Hardly 2 days left for the conference and the cycle of leaks and announcements seems not to end yet.

This time it’s an updated News Feed – if I call it a social magazine, perhaps you might agree with me. This smarter News Feed really appears like a social magazine with big photos and top stories. It was just before today when you had to switch between ‘Top Stories’ and ‘Most Recent’. Facebook was aware of the fact that this can be made better than this and finally they have come up with an ideal solution for it.

The Smarter News Feed combines both the types (Top and Recent) into a single feed. This has been done in a very smart way by Facebook. This smarter News Feed will provide the most important updates to users since they last logged in. for instance, the user will get the most recent items in his News Feed, if he logs in several times in a day, but if a user logs in after several days, then the News Feed will provide him with an outline of the most important updates by his friends.

Another major launch made by Facebook today is Facebook Ticker. Ticker is a stream of content appears in the right sidebar. Many of you may have experienced testing version of Ticker on your profiles for last few weeks. The Ticker displays the most recent activities from your friends. Whenever your friend ‘Like’ a post, update status message, comment on Album/Photos, the Ticker will instantly notify you. In addition to this, if you take your mouse-cursor over the update, the Ticker will show pop-over message displaying other relevant information.

The size of the photo thumbnails in feed has also increased today. Talking to media, the Facebook’s VP of Engineering Mike Schroepfer says that “larger photos are probably the change users will notice the most.”  Speaking about the News Feed he replied, “The new news feed is, in our mind, a simplification.”

In a response to nature and complexity of these new features and options he said:

The thing I personally find exciting is realizing three quarters of a billion people use the product and that range of experience can be someone with 15 friends to someone with tens of thousands of subscribers who uses the site for four hours every day. We are adding some features but trying to do our best to simplify what we can and make them optional.
