Twitter Loses VP Mike Abbott

The hard time continues for the Twitter. It was reported last month that Twitter lost two of its chief investors and chief scientist, Summize Co-founder Abdur Chowdhury. We have now come to know that the Twitter’s VP of Engineering Mike Abbott has also quit the company.

The news came just a day after it has launched its deep integration with latest iOS 5. It can be vital for Twitter. According to reports, Abbott quit because he is interested in doing more investing with other companies.

Twitter issued a statement confirming the reports of Mike Abbott departure. According to statement, Abbott is going to join Benchmark Capital as an entrepreneur in residence. Twitter says:

“We can confirm that Mike Abbott is no longer with Twitter. Mike will be available to assist the company in his new role as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Capital. We thank Mike for his leadership in growing an outstanding team of engineers from 100 to 400 that have successfully taken on the unique challenge of making Twitter reliable and stable. While Mike led the engineering team, Twitter grew from handling 55 million tweets a day to 230 million. Twitter is focused on aggressively moving forward to fulfill the profound opportunities that are in front of us.”

It is not a healthy sign for the company as his presence is thought to be a key Twitter’s stability. His departure can have a severe effect the dependability and future scaling of the platform.

The Benchmark’s Peter Fenton also shared his views over Abbott addition in their bench as:

“What Mike Abbott accomplished at Twitter is nothing short of heroic, when Benchmark introduced him to the company we felt he had the courage and entrepreneurial drive to build a strong engineering foundation. Today we applaud him for that extraordinary accomplishment. As we continue to work closely with the team at Twitter, we’re delighted to welcome Mike to Benchmark as an entrepreneur in residence. Mike will not only continue to lend his considerable talents to supporting the team at Twitter, but as a true entrepreneur at heart, will undoubtedly be an incredible asset to our entrepreneurs and our portfolio overall.”

Apparently, it seems that the decision of quitting Twitter is sudden by Abbott, but the sources suggest that the matter was under consideration for a while before Abbott made a final move.

Some reports suggest that Mike Abbott was hired as a high-profile figure for Twitter. He had been serving here for more than a year. Prior to join Twitter, Mike Abbott was serving at Palm and was in charge of the webOS platform.

Abbott was the man behind Twitter’s current status in the market. He brought innovations, stability and consistency to the Twitter’s communications and services platform. Before he joined the company, the Twitter was experiencing frequent outages responsible for disgracing Fail Whale.

It is a tough time to lose such a huge figure as the company recently launched its integration with iOS 5, which will certainly increase the load on their systems. Above all, the company has no direct replacement.
