Twitter Signups via iOS Devices Tripled

The CEO of Twitter, Dick Costolo disclosed in an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit that Twitter signups via iOS devices have been upped three times since the official release of iOS 5. He emphasized on the fact that the massive growth in his platform is all because of the iOS 5 devices.

We have talked a lot about the Twitter’s deep integration with iOS 5, though at a basic level. Twitter has become the first company to be able to get this sort of access to Apple’s mobile operating system. However, it was also speculated earlier this year that Apple might be planning to sign a deal with Facebook when images of the OS with a Facebook entry in the Settings app appeared. The massive growth in Twitter signups is a clear sign of the potential that services like single sign-on and Twitter account sync has.

The integration with iOS 5 offers Twitter users a scope that draws them to the service despite the fact they have never used the service but at least give it a try. It is yet too early to assume whether these signups remain to be a real users of Twitter or not, but Costolo is pretty hopeful about Twitter’s future as he believes that the service has the potential to transform the inactive users into active participants. Last month he said in an informal business meeting:

“You come in, find things you’re interested in, get a timeline, and start engaging that way. Maybe after a while, after you’re following a bunch of accounts, you start to re-tweet. And then you start to reply to things after re-tweeting.”

In the similar meeting, Costolo also revealed that his platform had over 100 million active users of which 50% users logged on daily. He also pointed out that the statistics showed some 100M active users, but the number of people visiting their website was over 400M which clearly suggest that “people are getting value out of Twitter without logging in.”

The iOS 5 integration will certainly boost the growth of the Twitter as the tablet and smartphone markets are booming which means that more and more people start using Twitter through their iOS devices.
