Google Maps 6.0 for Android Features Indoor Mapping

When it comes to navigate the outdoor world, you already have a number of different options available including Google Maps and GPS. But there was no way to navigate through malls, airports and buildings – an indoor world until now.

Google has recently released an updated version of Google Maps application for Android as Google Maps 6.0 for Android. The update not only improves the mapping experience for the outdoor world, but also goes to an extent to cover some heavily-trafficked indoor spaces.

Google’s Product Management Director Chikae Ohazama describes the new update through Lat Lot Blog saying, “When you’re inside an airport, shopping mall or retail store, a common way to figure out where you are is to look for a freestanding map directory or ask an employee for help. With the release of Google Maps 6.0 for Android, that directory is brought to the palm of your hands, helping you determine where you are, what floor you’re on and where to go indoors.”

Indoor map data is perhaps not available at all the places, but where it is available, the Android-powered tablet and smartphone users will be able to view detailed plans on their devices by zooming in on a building. A typical “blue dot” icon refers to the user’s current location and will keep on updating the location as the user moves.

Google also said that it has partnered with many retailers and transit centers, such as the Mall of America in Minneapolis, IKEA, The Home Depot, several Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s locations, Chicago O’Hare airport, San Francisco International Airport and Tokyo’s Narita International airport.

In addition to these, the new update will help users to use a toolbar to navigate through several features quickly – from viewing their location on a map and finding GPS directions to locating nearby restaurants and stores. Moreover, Google Maps 6.0 for Android sports a new home screen for its Places feature that spotlights previous searches for any location.

The Google Maps app for Android can be installed on devices running Android 2.1 or later.

If you want to give Google Maps 6.0 for Android a try, you can download it from Android Market.
