Google Officially Announces New, Refreshed Gmail

Couple of weeks ago, Google accidently uploaded a video on its YouTube channel detailing its completely refreshed web-based Gmail client. It is finally official now as Google announced its new-look Gmail late on Tuesday. The new Gmail features an enhanced navigation. Better search options and customizable information density.

An official announcement made in a blog post by Google. The changes made will give users more control over the look of the service. The fresher look of Gmail features simple and light styling as we have already experienced in certain other Google’s products. However, an interesting new feature makes the layout density selectable.

With new Gmail, users need not to worry about the scaling issues as it is designed to scale automatically to different display sizes. Users also have the option to choose between ‘Comfortable’, ‘Cozy’ and ‘Compact’ density choices.

A good number of new themes have also been introduced thanks to iStockphoto. New themes will automatically update the current themes.

The Gmail users can now enjoy a new search function – they will be able to perform Advanced Search by clicking on the search bar. With new search options, users need not to move onto a separate page. The new search function will also allow users to perform insta-create filters based on search. A navigation panel is also revised which will enable users to resize the label and chat zones. Profile pictures have been added, while conversations have been condensed.

Although, the new Gmail is not yet rolled out to users, but those who want to give it a try a ‘Switch to the new look’ at the bottom right will take them to new Gmail. However, Google says that they will soon begin rolling out its new Gmail to all users.

Google User Experience Designer Jason Cornwell states, “If you like what you see, over the next few days you’ll be able to switch to the new look by clicking on Switch to the new look in the bottom-right of Gmail.”

Google seems to mess around too much with its products to make them more and more user-friendly and perhaps to drive more traffic to its product by offering up-to-date services.

Good story on Van. Hopefully DJ Hunter can shake off the rust like Van seems to have when he gets to make his appearence.
