Chrome 15 Defeats Internet Explorer 8 as World’s Most Popular Browser

Google has managed to score another victory in the browser war with its desktop web browser, Chrome. The digital analytics company StatCounter said in one of its report that Google Chrome’s latest version has gone past Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE8) to become the world’s most popular desktop web browser.

Currently, Chrome is holding the top spot with 24.55% of the world market, crossing the Internet Explorer 8’s world market share of 22.16%. Mozilla’s Firefox 8.0 is surprisingly at the third spot with 15.53% of worldwide market share.

It is important to note here that we are talking about the specific versions of the browsers. However, if we see the collective results of all the versions, Internet Explorer is on the top with 38.5% of world market, followed by Chrome’s 27.08%. Firefox is just behind the Chrome with 25.55% of market share. One thing is clear here that Chrome is growing in popularity at an immense rate over the recent few months.

The major reason of Internet Explorer’s dominance in the market is the fact of being a default browser on Windows machines. Microsoft released its Internet Explorer 8 back in 2008 and is the latest version to be compatible with PCs running Windows XP. Although, the software giant has released Windows Vista and Windows 7 afterwards, still a large number of Windows machines run XP.

Compared to other popular browsers, Chrome is relatively new in the market. It was released in 2008 and in its 15th version. Since its appearance, the browser has gain a lot of popularity among the masses because of its speed, strong design and automatic updates. These features have also been imitated by other browsers.

The statistics provided by StatCounter are based on looks at page-view data from over 3 million websites. Contrary to this, some other services like Net Applications look at unique visitors and ranked Internet Explorer on the top. According to Net Applications, the Internet Explorer (all versions) accounts for 53% of the world market share.

The current progress of Chrome gives us a clear hint that it will soon become the world’s popular browser in all versions, beating IE and Firefox. Firefox seems to lose its popularity over the recent few months and Mozilla is trying it best to provide best features to somehow put stop to losing user-base.
