Apple Confirms Secret Anobit Acquisition

Almost three weeks ago, news of deal between Apple and Israeli flash-memory drive producer Anobit surfaced and now Apple has confirmed that it has finalized the acquisition of Anobit. The Israeli’s Prime Minister also welcomed the Cupertino firm to the country through his Twitter account.

Steve Dowling, the Anobit’s spokesperson confirmed that Apple has bought the company, though he refused to provide any further details and terms of deal. Also, there is no mention of the value that Apple has paid to the company to acquire it. While talking to Bloomberg, Dowling said:

Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.

The previous reports suggest that the Anobit have a value of as much as $500 million. The company has already produced key parts for the Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The acquisition will further strengthen the Apple hold in the market as it dependency on third parties for the parts lessen through such deals. Bloomberg reports that Apple is the world’s biggest purchaser of NAND flash (accounted for approximately quarter within the last quarter), and this acquisition make it stronger in terms of getting the key parts without the need to depend on any third party.

It seems that Apple is pretty keen to establish its strong hold in the Israel. This is obvious from the fact that the Cupertino firm has already hired a high profile figure in the Israeli tech market, Aharon Aharon. Aharon has a strong background in tech scene as he is the founder of Camero, an RF-based imaging system company established in 2004. Also, he served for Zoran, Discretix and IBM.

There are reports that Apple has hired Aharon so that he will provide the company assistance in establishing a semiconductor development center in the region. For this, he spent a good number of months at Apple headquarters in Cupertino in 2011 in connection with this project.

However, Apple has not yet revealed its intentions clearly about what it is up to in the region, but the approach clearly suggest that Apple has high hopes to expand its roots in the country.
