Ice Cream Sandwich Now Runs on 0.6% of All Android Devices

Google has recently updated its Android Developers portal to show the state of all Android devices currently in use. The search giant reveals that the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich firmware is currently running in 0.6% of all Android devices.

Google updates its Platform Versions page twice a month in which it mapping the usage of each of its Android software releases. Today, the search giant has released the initial figures for Ice Cream Sandwich usage since it release.

The small figures are perhaps because of its slow rollout. The previous version known as Gingerbread is functional on about 55.5% of devices. There are only few devices which are running the software officially, including Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S.

On a combined scale, Android 4.0 and 4.0.3 make up the same percentage as Google’s first release, Android 1.5 (Cupcake). It is available for devices that haven’t been supported by the Google or haven’t offered upgrades by their carrier to newer software.

When Enders Analysis analyst Benedict Evans was asked to give his thought on the numbers of devices that have activated Ice Cream Sandwich since it debut, he referred us to his post.

Now the question arises whether the numbers of Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich do in reality fall between 1.3 million and 1.5 million. The explanation seems pretty simple when we consider the fact that Samsung Galaxy Nexus has done well since it hit the shelves back in November 2011 and acknowledges that Nexus S is a popular device. Furthermore, the Korean company has also rolled out the ICS updates for Galaxy S II and several other devices. Moreover, several different interfaces have made their way in to the software through Cyanogen.

Samsung and other Android manufactures have not disclosed any official numbers regarding ICS activation. However, it seems that Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) has managed to make an impression and in the coming days its share grows with the support from Android device makers including Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.
