Microsoft Aiming for HD Set-Top Box with Kinect Integration

The Daily reports that Microsoft is preparing a set-top box in which the Redmond-based company adds Kinect features, whereas as connecting it with several music and video services.

Moreover, the device will also include different apps and games. Microsoft describes its device as an entertainment-specific media hub. Also, the company will keep its device completely a different product to the Xbox 360 compared to other peripheral. The Redmond-based company has not yet disclosed much about it; however, it is currently named as “Live Xbox”, “Kinect Box” and “Kinect HD”. What we assume that the latter name is the one most suitable for the device as one cannot rollout the importance of HD in the name.

Prior to this news, Microsoft has announced that it is holding back the plans for a video subscription service in Xbox Live. However, the company ensures that it won’t have any impact on this entirely different project. Although. There is not much information available, but it is speculated that the Kinect HD is supposed to be “a low-profile version of the Kinect with a larger base.” In order to keep it simple and clutter-free, Microsoft will launch it will a single cable which “branches out to HDMI, power and USB.” The device is yet to be designed and it is not known whether optical audio parts and other related components would be included.

Where there are rumblings related to Apple’s plans for voice-activated television in the shape of iTV, several consumer electronics firms are inspecting and planning to introduce interactivity for our TV sets. It doesn’t mean at all that they are thinking to remove remote controls entirely from the scene, however, the Xbox Companion app released recently to Windows Phone users could be used in place of a remote control. All these details are currently based on speculations and what actually been in the work is still to be disclosed by Microsoft.

The gadget is primarily scheduled to launch sometime later this year. However, The Daily assumes that it will perhaps release prior to the new Xbox console with a price tag of around $150.
