The BBC Announces Android News App for Honeycomb Tablets

An updated version of the Android News app is announced by the BBC. The updated version is designed for big-screen Android tablets and can be downloaded free from the Android Market in the UK.

BBC’s Mobile Product Manager for News and Future Media, Kate Milner said, “This follows the success of the BBC News app for Android smartphones, which has been downloaded more than 3 million times globally since launching last year.”

The app was first released back in May 2011 and was available for download for all Android phones and tablets running Android version 1.6 and above. However, it was not previously supported Honeycomb tablets, tablets with Android version 3.0.

The latest app is specially designed to offer an optimized experience to the owners of larger tablet devices, running Honeycomb and above. However, the smaller 7.1-inch tablets will continue to get the non-optimized version of the smartphone application.

The app supports both 3G and Wi-Fi and one can personalize it in the similar fashion as the smartphone version – users will be able to select which news feed they get, sport, technology, business, science and so on. Moreover, the app also offers an On Demand Video inside the stories.

Milner further said that the later release will hopefully launch with a support for News Channel live, also the company is aiming to introduce homescreen widgets too.

According to Milner, “Growing numbers of people are accessing BBC News on mobiles and tablets. In an average week, the BBC News sites and apps are visited by around 9.7m users worldwide on mobile and tablet devices. That represents about 26% of the total. The BBC News product development team will be working on further mobile and tablet improvements over the coming year.”

Surprisingly, the iPhone and iPad version of the app saw almost 3 million downloads in the United Kingdom alone from its launch in mid-2010 to May 2011. While it saw another 3 million downloads when it comes to global figures with an iOS News app.

The Android app was currently available for the users of UK only, however, BBC launched its global version following the few weeks after the launch in UK. The company said that the optimized version of this app will soon be rolled out to its international users.
