USB 3.0 Coming to Smartphones and Tablets

It has been reported that the smartphones and tablet devices will available with a USB 3.0-based microUSB connector. This will offer a speedier data transfer over the existing USB 2.0 ports.

Theoretically speaking, USB 3.0 offers a data transfer rates of about 625MB/s – 10 times faster than the USB 2.0 that offers a maximum data transfer of 60MB/s. Although, the transfer speed on mobile devices won’t be as fast, still USB 3.0 will offer a faster experience than what we experience now.

CTO of the USB Implementers Forum, Rahman Ismail at the CES trade show in Las Vegas said, “What takes 15 minutes will roughly take 1 minute and 10 seconds.”

Moreover, the USB 3.0 will enable the mobile devices including smartphones and tablets to recharge at a faster rate.

When it comes to implement USB 3.0 in the mobile devices, the USB Implementers Forum needs to develop new specifications for the standard. Ismail explained, “We’re coming out with new specs, new areas where we will make it very power efficient, power friendly.”

Ismail also said that the company is looking to restrict the size of USB 3.0 ports on laptops for the fact that it is becoming a limiting factor in laptop thinness.
