LinkedIn Buys Gmail Contextual Contact Plugin Rapportive

Rapportive has announced in one of its blog post that LinkedIn has acquired the plugin. The plugin provides users context regarding to their contacts within Gmail. It is available in the form a plugin that substitutes sidebar within Gmail.

According to the terms of the deal, Rapportive will now be a part of LinkedIn. Rapportive has been partnered with LinkedIn previously. The first news of this acquisition was broke by All Things D last week, which came to reality now.

Rahul Vohra of Rapportive said, “During our partnership with LinkedIn, we got to know them very well. We found a great overlap between our visions. We found a high-calibre and extremely driven team.” He further adds, “We found, crucially, a “members-first” company: everything that LinkedIn does is about making its members more successful.”

Apparently, it looks like that the acquisition means LinkedIn now owns the entire Rapportive team. However, it says that it will continue to Rapportive and will hope to “build beautiful products that make you brilliant with people.”

Rapprotive has been in news for quite some time now. It all started when it mistakenly announced its product to the whole world through an online tech blog.

When it comes to Rapportive’s functionality for Gmail, it is a bit different from Xobni for Outlook, in the sense that it offers dynamic contact previews to Gmail with images, a brief bio and links to social networking profiles. It is certainly good to find that it will continue build its own product for time being. Now, what is more confusing is the fact that what change Rapportive team would bring to LinkedIn.
