Skype Scores another Record with 34 Million Concurrent Users

It is only a week ago when web-voice and video calling giant Skype claimed a new record of hitting 32 million users using the service at the same time. The record has already been broken after the Microsoft-owned Skype saw 34 million concurrent users on Monday.

Although, these numbers are way behind the active user base of Twitter that saw 100 million users per month last year and Facebook recording 766 million on web and 60 million to mobile apps, Skype’s recorded figure is somewhat impressive considering its real-time usage.

Skype’s Social Media Director and Blogger-in-Chief Jennifer Caukin has said on Skype’s official blog:

It’s a quick jump and speaks to the volume of people who rely on Skype everyday around the world to stay in touch. Perhaps it’s driven by all the buzz of people talking about the Oscars, NASCAR Daytona 500, or maybe it can be attributed to our announcement today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona for our new Skype for Windows Phone Beta app.

Subsequent to the rumblings surfaced earlier this month, Skype released a beta version of its Windows Phone app. With its beta version of Windows Phone app, Skype is looking to see its new app as popular as its other apps. Skype for iOS has almost passed 60 million downloads, while the Android app has hit over 10 million downloads.

Skype for Windows Phone has been in debates for a long time. Even comments been made in 2010 in which company disclosed that it had no plans to develop a native app for the platform. But seeing the growth of its Windows Phone platform, the company has reviewed its policies. Most importantly, the acquisition of Skype for $8.5 billion back in May 2011 by Microsoft is another major cause behind the changing minds of Redmond-based software giant.
