Smartphone Buyers Prefer Android over iPhone

NPD Group conducted a research and found out that Apple has given up on Samsung and LG to become the number 1 selling US handset make in the Q4 2011. Taking into account all the Apple smartphone versions including iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, iPhone had 43% of the US smartphone market share, while for Android the figures raised to 48%.

On the combined scale, both Apple and Android handset devices made up for 90% of the total US sales, with BlackBerry, Windows Phone and other mobile operating systems having 10% of sales.

The NPD said that 54% of first time smartphone buyers in United States preferred Android handsets, only 34% of first time smartphone buyers went with iPhone handsets.

The most possible reason of this domination is thought to be Android having at least one smartphone handset on majority of major US Carriers besides considering a massive number of Android handset devices available in the market.

When it comes to different models of iPhone, Apple’s iPhone 4S simply outclasses all other models to retain the top position, despite the fact that iPhone 4 is offered at cheaper price. Ross Robin, executive director of Connected Intelligence for The NPD Group, said that the popularity of new model is because of “iPhone’s “faster processor, improved camera and the Siri speech-driven agent.”

You might be surprised to know that even the price won’t restrict iPhone 4S to be on the top spot for Apple. Still its older models continue to do well in sales, but the growing popularity of Android handsets is a big threat to Apple.
